IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays it's possible for people to buy many products or pay for treatments that help them to look younger.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Nowadays, people can easily buy products or undergo treatments that help them look younger. While some believe that these options improve confidence and personal well-being, I believe that this trend is largely negative because it can create unrealistic beauty standards and may also pose health risks.

One of the main concerns about anti-aging products and treatments is their potential impact on people's health. Many individuals choose cosmetic procedures such as skin treatments, injections, or surgeries in order to maintain a youthful appearance. Although these methods may produce quick results, they can sometimes lead to serious side effects if they are not carried out properly. For example, there have been many cases where individuals experienced complications after undergoing cosmetic procedures at unregulated clinics. This shows that the desire to look younger can sometimes encourage people to take unnecessary health risks.

Another negative aspect of this trend is that it promotes unrealistic expectations about beauty. Advertising and social media often present youthful appearance as the ideal standard, which can create pressure on people to look young at all times. As a result, many individuals feel dissatisfied with their natural aging process and may spend large amounts of money on beauty products and treatments. In the long run, this can negatively affect people's self-esteem and contribute to a culture where aging is viewed negatively rather than as a natural part of life.

In conclusion, although products and treatments that promise a younger appearance may boost confidence for some people, I believe that this development is largely negative because it can create unrealistic beauty standards and expose individuals to potential health risks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The student fully addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating a position on whether anti-aging products and treatments are a positive or negative development. The response presents a well-developed argument, exploring both health risks and unrealistic beauty standards. The introduction establishes a clear stance ('this trend is largely negative'), and each body paragraph focuses on a distinct, relevant point supported by examples, such as complications from unregulated clinics and psychological pressure from advertising and social media. The conclusion effectively summarises the main ideas and restates the writer's position. Overall, the ideas are fully extended and well-supported throughout the essay, demonstrating a strong command of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression from introduction to conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph dedicated to a single, coherent theme. Cohesive devices are managed well without feeling mechanical, using transitions such as 'Although these methods', 'For example', and 'As a result' to connect ideas smoothly. Referencing throughout the text is clear, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the progression of arguments. While cohesion is strong and unobtrusive, occasional minor refinements in transitional variety could elevate it further, but the current management easily fulfills the criteria for a high band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using less common items and collocations with good awareness of style. Examples such as 'unregulated clinics', 'unrealistic beauty standards', 'natural aging process', and 'personal well-being' show lexical flexibility and precision. Word choice is generally accurate, and spelling is flawless. While the vocabulary is fluent and fits the context naturally, it occasionally relies on standard discursive phrasing rather than highly sophisticated or nuanced idiomatic expressions, which prevents it from reaching the highest band. Nevertheless, communication is entirely smooth and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The response exhibits a good variety of complex structures and compound sentences used accurately throughout the text. The majority of sentences are error-free, showcasing strong control over grammar and punctuation. Examples of complex forms include concessive clauses ('Although these methods may produce quick results...') and relative clauses ('...treatments that help them to look younger'). Punctuation is used correctly to demarcate clauses and items in a list. Only very occasional minor slips or slight awkwardness might appear, but they never impede communication or strain the reader. The grammatical control is solid and supports the clear communication of ideas.
