IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays it's possible for people to buy many products or pay for treatments that help them to look younger.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, people can easily buy products or undergo treatments that help them look younger. While some believe that these options improve confidence and personal well-being, I believe that this trend is largely negative because it can create unrealistic beauty standards and may also pose health risks.

One of the main concerns about anti-aging products and treatments is their potential impact on people's health. Many individuals choose cosmetic procedures such as skin treatments, injections, or surgeries in order to maintain a youthful appearance. Although these methods may produce quick results, they can sometimes lead to serious side effects if they are not carried out properly. For example, there have been many cases where individuals experienced complications after undergoing cosmetic procedures at unregulated clinics. This shows that the desire to look younger can sometimes encourage people to take unnecessary health risks.

Another negative aspect of this trend is it's promotes unrealistic expectations about beauty. Advertising and social media often present youthful appearance as the ideal standard, which can create pressure on people to look young at all times. As a result, many individuals feel dissatisfied with their natural aging process and may spend large amounts of money on beauty products and treatments. In the long run, this can negatively affect people's self-esteem and contribute to the culture where aging is viewed negatively rather than as a natural part of life.

However, some people argue that anti-aging products can improve confidence and help individuals feel better about themselves. While this may be true to some extent, I believe that these benefits are often temporary and do not outweigh the potential health risks and social pressures associated with this trend.

In conclusion, although products and treatments that promise a younger appearance may boost confidence for some people, I believe that this development is largely negative because it can create unrealistic beauty standards and expose individuals to potential health risks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the task effectively, presenting a clear and well-developed position throughout the essay. The introduction establishes a clear stance that the trend is largely negative due to unrealistic beauty standards and health risks. Body paragraphs are well-supported with relevant examples, such as complications from cosmetic procedures at unregulated clinics and the psychological impact of advertising. The counter-argument is acknowledged in the fourth paragraph and successfully refuted in the conclusion. The ideas are extended and supported effectively, satisfying the requirements for a Band 7.0 or higher.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with health concerns, followed by societal pressures, and concluding with a balanced acknowledgement of counter-arguments. Cohesive devices such as 'Although these methods', 'For example', 'As a result', and 'In conclusion' are used flexibly and appropriately. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively to separate different arguments. While referencing is generally clear, there is a minor grammatical slip in referencing ('it's promotes'), but overall the paragraph-level cohesion supports a smooth reading experience, aligning well with Band 7.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully employing topic-specific terms such as 'cosmetic procedures', 'unregulated clinics', 'youthful appearance', and 'self-esteem'. There are attempts to use less common items with general awareness of style and collocation. However, there are minor lexical inaccuracies, most notably the grammatical slip 'it's promotes' instead of 'it promotes'. Despite this minor error, the vocabulary is varied enough to allow for precise communication of ideas, fitting comfortably within the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or concessive clauses ('While some believe that...', 'Although these methods may produce quick results...'). There are frequent error-free sentences demonstrating good control of grammar and punctuation. However, a noticeable slip occurs in the third paragraph with the phrase 'it's promotes unrealistic expectations', which is a minor structural error. Punctuation and verb tenses are otherwise handled with good accuracy, and errors do not impede communication, matching the Band 7.0 criteria.
