Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether anti-ageing products and treatments are beneficial or harmful, taking a clear negative stance. The student presents relevant ideas, such as social media influence, marketing hype, health risks like skin cancer, and environmental pollution. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and occasionally repetitive. For instance, the mention of the consumer court in Mumbai is a specific example, but the connection to the overall prompt is slightly underdeveloped. The conclusion clearly restates the writer's position. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, placing it firmly at a Band 6.0 level according to the official descriptors, as the main parts of the prompt are covered with relevant, albeit somewhat under-developed, ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as marketing tactics in the second paragraph and health and environmental impacts in the third. Cohesive devices are employed, including transition markers like 'On the first hand', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. However, some referencing is slightly mechanical or awkward, and phrases like 'On the first hand' reflect unnatural collocation. While logical progression is generally maintained, the occasional clunky transition affects the overall flow. Therefore, this section aligns best with the Band 6 descriptors due to the logical arrangement and attempt at cohesive devices, despite some awkwardness.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'misrepresentation', 'consumer court', and 'immense side effects'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations throughout the text, such as 'ageing above 35 years have started to use products and have initated to pay', 'opting the treatment', and 'dieases'. Additionally, spelling errors like 'initated' and 'dieases' detract from precision. While communication is not severely impeded, the frequency of word choice inaccuracies and spelling slips prevents the score from reaching a higher band, making Band 5.5 a fair representation of the student's current lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate conjunctions such as 'which will make them look younger' and 'Although, while manufacturing, the waste also pollutes'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several errors in tense consistency, article usage, and prepositions, such as 'in age has increased in the recent times', 'an influence to the general public', and 'give a genuine thought on the immerse side effects'. Punctuation at the end of the essay is also missing a final period. Because these errors occur frequently alongside complex structures without completely blocking communication, the grammar performance meets the criteria for Band 5.5.
