IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays it's possible for people to buy many products or pay for treatments that help them to look younger.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Social media has promoted the need to look fit and young at all times. People try to achieve that by getting various treatments and buying products from the market. This essay will explain why trying to look younger with these products is harmful.
Several crucial reasons support this view. To begin with, getting younger by using products is an unnatural way to look a little younger. When one is achieving those results by consuming or applying various materials, it dosen not lasts forever. As a result, once an individual stops consuming the product, it reverses the effect. For instance, many people apply creams and take pills to look good and fit. However, the results eventually fade away once one stops taking them. Also, consuming such products disrupts the balance of hormones in your body. In the long term, this deteriorates your health.
Getting various treatments is not only difficult, but also extremely expensive. Moreover, if the process fails, the damage is severe and irreversible. This can significantly affect an individual. For example, we have all seen the severe effects of Botox and filler failures. This can affect an individual mentally as well as physically. Additionally, not all practitioners are qualified. People are attracted to places that have lower prices. However, sometimes they are unqualified to perform such procedures. Getting treatment from them can be harmful. So, these have severe consequences.
In conclusion, getting treatment to look younger can help one boost their confidence and morale. However, I believe it is not a good thing as it imbalances hormones, is expensive, and the results are irreversible.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by clearly taking a position that buying products and treatments to look younger is a bad thing, supporting this view with reasons related to health risks, financial costs, and temporary effects. The introduction and body paragraphs present relevant ideas, such as the temporary nature of creams and the dangers of unqualified practitioners. However, the development tends to be somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the harmful physical consequences and the temporary nature of treatments. While all parts of the task are addressed, the ideas would benefit from deeper extension and more specific examples beyond general mentions of creams, pills, and Botox. Overall, the task response aligns well with Band 6.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as product use versus clinical treatments. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Additionally', although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, as seen in the phrase 'consuming such products' linking back to the previous sentence. Logical progression is maintained throughout the response, ensuring the reader can follow the writer's argument without difficulty, which satisfies the requirements for Band 6.5, rounded to 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully using terms such as 'deteriorates', 'irreversible', and 'unqualified practitioners'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though occasional word choice and collocation issues appear, such as 'getting younger' instead of 'looking younger' or 'achieving a youthful appearance'. Furthermore, there is a minor spelling error ('dosen not lasts'). However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main arguments clearly, and the lexical errors do not impede communication. These characteristics place the response firmly in the Band 6 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as conditional-like statements and relative clauses ('once an individual stops consuming the product, it reverses the effect' and 'People are attracted to places that have lower prices'). There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, notably the slip 'dosen not lasts' and minor punctuation or pronoun inconsistencies ('your body' mixed with 'an individual'). However, the majority of simple sentences are error-free, and the complex structures attempted do not obscure the meaning. The control over grammar and punctuation supports a solid Band 6 performance.
