Student answer (Band 6.5)

Spending on skincare products and clinically approved treatments have gained a lot of momentum nowadays as it helps people to look much younger. This could be a positive effect desired by some people who want to conceal their aging for different purposes. But, in my opinion, this is a bad thing as it might expose individuals to significant health risks.

Nowadays, professionals desire to look younger and delay their aging process to preserve their beauty. There is a growing fear among themselves that people will not find them glamourous and attractive once they look older and slowly they might become irrelevant in their respective business industry. Therefore, they apply various products on their skin or undergo specialized treatments which help them stay younger and more attractive. For example, In the domain of film industry like Hollywood, actors and actresses tend to use skincare products to younger and enhance their on-screen presence. This might help them to progress further in their career, even of they become older.

However, excessive use of skin care products poses significant health risks in the long term. Usage of artificial skincare products and treatments results in application of chemicals on the skin which may provide short-term benefits but it might inflict diseases like cancer. Also, there are products in the market which tends to claim a lot more than they actually offer. For instance, Some companies, in order to exploit people, release products without performing clinical trials. There is no guarantee that such products do not impose any side effects and offer things which they claim to offer.

In conclusion, More people are buying products and spending on treatments which delays their aging and make them look younger. This could be desirable for some people due to their nature of their profession but this is a bad thing as they include significant health risks in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing whether anti-aging products and treatments are a good or bad thing, clearly stating a position in the introduction that this is a bad thing due to health risks. The ideas are generally relevant and extended, such as the example of the film industry and the discussion of unregulated market products. However, there is some minor over-generalisation regarding the inevitability of diseases like cancer, and the development could be slightly more refined. Overall, the task is well-addressed, fulfilling the criteria for Band 6.5 to 7.0. Given the clear position and supported arguments throughout, it aligns well with Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response features a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction outlines the stance, body paragraph one discusses professional motives, body paragraph two discusses health risks, and the conclusion summarises the argument. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as "However," "Also," and "For instance," though some referencing is slightly repetitive ("products" and "treatments"). Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to structure the ideas. Minor faults in cohesion prevent it from reaching a higher band, but the overall logical flow easily secures a solid Band 6.5 or 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task with some flexibility and precision, incorporating terms such as "momentum," "conceal," "unprocessed," "clinically approved," and "exploitation." There are attempts to use less common items with general awareness of style and collocation, although some slight inaccuracies occur, such as "business industry" (redundant) and "tends to claim" instead of "tend." Spelling and word-choice errors do not impede communication at all. The lexical range is adequate and meets the descriptors for Band 6.5, leaning towards Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over complex structures in sentences such as "Spending on skincare products and clinically approved treatments have gained a lot of momentum..." However, there are a few grammatical inaccuracies, such as subject-verb agreement ("Spending... have gained" instead of "has gained") and minor prepositional or article issues (e.g., "in domain of film industry"). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and errors do not impede communication, placing the grammatical performance firmly in the Band 6.5 range.
