Student answer (Band 6.0)

Individuals these days are spending more money to look attractive because of easy availability of skin care products and clinical treatments. Although, certain skin care creams can give temporary glow, I strongly believe that carcinogenic materials found in them can be extremely dangerous for the skin.

Customers spend too much on expensive skin care products and treatments to look attractive and beautiful. Most of the skin care creams and serums are made up of carcinogenic materials which can cause skin cancer if not used under medical supervision. Individuals try to use different active ingredients like Vitamin C, niacinamide and kojic acid all together for faster results. This actually damages the skin barrier and leads to irritation and other skin allergies and hence causing more damage than good.

Not only this, Instruments used in expensive clinical treatments can spread infections. If an Aesthetician do not sterilize them properly and use the same kit for different clients it can cause bacterial infections. So instead of looking younger people can end up having serious skin infections. Moreover, the glow and moisture provided by these treatments is of temporary period and to maintain that glow one has to spend money every 2/3 months on the treatments which can bring financial unstability in life.

To conclude, Neverthless, skin care gives healthy glow, the ingredients used in making of the serums or creams can be harmful for the skin.It can be said that people should use the skin care materials under medical supervision and very carefully to prevent any deterimnetal effects and adverse reactions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether products and treatments to look younger are a good or bad thing. The student takes a clear position that it is a bad thing due to the dangers of carcinogenic materials and infections, and supports this with arguments about skin barriers, bacterial infections, and financial instability. However, the development tends to focus heavily on the negative aspects, making the discussion somewhat one-sided, which aligns closely with Band 6 or 7 descriptors. The ideas are relevant and generally supported with examples like Vitamin C and niacinamide, although some points could be expanded further for a higher band. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, establishing a clear stance throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure separating the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Although', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude', but they are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly placed, as seen in the phrasing 'To conclude, Neverthless, skin care gives healthy glow...' which disrupts logical progression. Referencing is generally clear, and each body paragraph focuses on a distinct sub-topic (products, treatments, and financial impact). However, transitions between sentences can feel abrupt, placing this criterion solidly in the Band 6 range.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'carcinogenic materials', 'active ingredients', and 'financial unstability'. There are some word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'deterimnetal' instead of 'detrimental' and the awkward collocation 'financial unstability' instead of 'financial instability'. Despite these errors, meaning is generally clear and communication is not impeded. The student demonstrates sufficient flexibility to discuss medical and financial concepts, achieving a solid Band 6.0 for this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Although, certain skin care creams can give temporary glow, I strongly believe that...'). There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, such as missing articles ('give temporary glow', 'is of temporary period'), subject-verb agreement errors ('If an Aesthetician do not sterilize'), and a punctuation error with a lowercase start after a period ('results. This actually'). However, these errors rarely impede overall communication, allowing the student to secure a Band 6.
