IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays it's possible for people to buy many products or pay for treatments that help them to look younger.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this modern era, people spend their money on products and treatments that help them to look younger. Some people believe that using such products help develop confidence and self-esteem. However, some individuals argue that people should not waste excessive money on these certain beauty treatments as it may affects their body in a negative way.

One of the main reasons for using such products is that it can help people to look attractive and younger. Nowadays, people have gone through various surgeries to change their body parts. Moreover, they are willing to spend money on expensive body serums and pills to eliminate wrinkles and blemishes on the face. Thus, it helps people to become more confident and happier. For example, many actresses consult with their doctors for surgeries to enhance their facial features and body parts, because they want to stay in film industry for a long period of time.

On the other hand, there are some drawbacks associated with this trend. One of them is wastage of hard earned money. People tend to spend a large amount of their income on surgeries, which might sometimes affect their body badly and results in cardio diseases. for instance, a press report was printed in 2024, in which they claim that over 70 percent people suffer from heart related diseases due the use of strong products and treatments. So, people should consider a negative side carefully before making decision.

In conclusion, although such kinds of treatments and products have numerous advantages, we cannot ignore negative side. I believe that people should focus on their diet and daily exercise rather than relaying on convenient ways to look younger.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing whether products and treatments to look younger are a good or bad thing, presenting a clear position throughout. The introduction outlines both perspectives, and subsequent body paragraphs explore the psychological benefits like increased confidence, alongside drawbacks such as financial cost and health risks. Ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as actresses undergoing surgeries and a reference to a press report. However, some arguments lack complete depth, such as the unsupported statistical claim about heart diseases, which places the response firmly within Band 6. The position is maintained logically and supported adequately, satisfying all criteria for a Band 6 score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct theme (advantages on one hand, drawbacks on the other). Cohesive devices are employed adequately to connect ideas, such as 'One of the main reasons', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally mechanical or slightly faulty, such as the abrupt transition in the final sentence and minor issues with sentence connectivity. Overall, the organizational structure is clear and easy to follow, justifying a solid Band 6 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'self-esteem', 'eliminate wrinkles', 'blemishes', and 'cardio diseases'. However, there are notable instances of word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'it may affects' (grammatical slip affecting lexical accuracy), 'wastage of hard earned money', and 'relaying on' instead of 'relying on'. Spelling is generally accurate, but some phrasing feels slightly unnatural. The vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the writer's ideas clearly, but the presence of noticeable lexical errors and limitations prevents the score from reaching Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses, relative clauses, and introductory prepositional phrases. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text that interrupt fluency. Examples include 'using such products help develop' (subject-verb agreement error), 'it may affects' (modal verb error), 'for instance, a press report' (capitalisation error), and 'due the use' (missing preposition). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though occasional comma splices or missing capitals occur. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, their frequency means the response falls short of the error-free control required for Band 7.
