IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays it's possible for people to buy many products or pay for treatments that help them to look younger.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In today's modren society, it is feasible for individuals to purchase a wide range of goods or undergo cosmatic treatments that help them maintain a youthful appearance. From my perspective, this trend has both positive and negative aspects.
One significant advantage of buying products and undergoing beauty treatments is that it can help slow down the ageing process and enable people to maintain the youthful look for longer. Numerous cosmetic products allow consumers to reduce their wrinkles and fine lines, making them appear younger, which consequently builds their confidence and self-esteem. For instance, individuals who use suitable skin products may feel more confident and comforable in soacial and proffessional situations. Therefore, such products and treatments can have a positive impact on a person's self-confidence and overall well-being.
On the other hand, there are several drawbacks associated with the use of cosmetic products and treatments. Firstly, some beauty products may cause allergic reactions or other skin problems, such as redness, irritation and dryness, particularly if they are unsuitable for a person’s skin type. As a result, instead of improving their appearance, individuals may end up damaging their skin. Furthermore, excessive use of cosmetic products or procedures may affect a person’s natural appearance. Some individuals may become overly dependent on such treatments in an attempt to look younger and gradually lose confidence in their natural looks. In addition, certain cosmetic procedures can be expensive and may require repeated treatments, which can place a financial burden on individuals. Therefore, these products and treatments can have negative effects on both a person’s appearance and finances.
In conclusion, although cosmetic products and treatments can help individuals maintain a youthful appearance and boost their self-confidence, they may also cause skin problems and affect their natural appearance. In my opinion, they can be beneficial as long as they are used carefully and in moderation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the positive and negative aspects of products and treatments designed to help people look younger. The student presents a clear position from the introduction and maintains it throughout the essay. Ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the discussion on how cosmetic products can build confidence versus how they can cause allergic reactions or financial burdens. The arguments are extended naturally, fulfilling the requirements for Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to the advantages, disadvantages, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'One significant advantage', 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, resulting in a cohesive structure that meets the standards of Band 7.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some flexibility and precision with terms like 'ageing process', 'allergic reactions', and 'financial burden'. Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of style, though there are a few noticeable spelling errors ('modren' instead of modern, 'cosmatic' instead of cosmetic, 'comforable' instead of comfortable, 'soacial' instead of social, 'proffessional' instead of professional). These minor slips prevent a higher score, but the vocabulary is adequate to communicate ideas clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response employs a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or relative clauses such as 'individuals who use suitable skin products may feel more confident' and 'products and treatments that help them maintain'. Control of grammar and punctuation is generally good, and despite a few minor spelling and typographical errors, the majority of sentences are error-free and communication is never impeded. This performance aligns well with the Band 7 descriptors.
