Nowadays it's possible for people to buy many products or pay for treatments that help them to look younger.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In recent years, a wide range of cosmetic products and medical treatments are available for those who wish to maintain a youthful appearance. While some people argue that this trend places unnecessary pressures on individuals to look young, I believe it is substantially a productive transformation when these options are used sensibly.
One major advantage is that such products can enhance an individual's confidence and overall satisfaction with their appearance. Aging naturally brings changes such as wrinkles, grey hair, and loss of skin, some adults may feel less comfortable with their physical appearance. Access to effective skincare, hair treatments, and cosmetic procedures can therefore give them greater self-assurance. However, certain treatments can provide practical health benefits. For instance, dental procedures can improve both person's smile and oral hygiene, while dermatological treatments can address persistent skin conditions. Additionally, the expanding beauty and healthcare industries can create employment opportunities and contribute to economic growth.
Nevertheless, there are legitimate concerns surrounding this development. The constant promotion of youthful appearances can create unrealistic expectations, particularly for younger generations. Consequently, some people may be excessively concerned about their looks, and they spend a considerable amount of money on unnecessary procedures. Furthermore, cosmetic surgery can involve complications, especially when treated by inexperienced practitioners. Although these risks should not be ignored, they can be reduced by strict rules, professional medical advice, and informed consumer choices.
In conclusion, I regard the widespread availability of anti-aging products and treatments as a beneficial development overall. Provided that people use these options moderately and make well-informed decisions. The pros are likely to outweigh the cons.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of anti-aging products and treatments, and clearly stating a personal position in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as mentioning dental procedures, dermatological treatments, and economic growth. The writer considers both the psychological benefits, like boosted self-assurance, and the potential drawbacks, such as financial costs and surgical risks. The position remains clear throughout the essay, and the arguments are logically extended without slipping into excessive generalisation. This fully satisfies the requirements for a Band 7.5 to Band 8 level, demonstrating a well-thought-out approach to the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are structured sensibly into an introduction, two body paragraphs exploring opposing views, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader through the text, as seen with transition words like 'However', 'Additionally', and 'Nevertheless'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph having a distinct thematic focus. Although the final sentence is fragmented ('Provided that people use these options moderately and make well-informed decisions. The pros are likely to outweigh the cons.'), overall coherence remains clear, and the logical flow is well-maintained, easily earning a solid Band 7.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for flexibility and precision, successfully using less common lexical items such as 'transformations', 'self-assurance', 'dermatological treatments', and 'unrealistic expectations'. Word choices are generally appropriate for an IELTS General Training response, though there are occasional minor inaccuracies in collocation or phrasing, such as 'loss of skin' instead of 'loss of skin elasticity'. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout the text, allowing the reader to follow the arguments without difficulty. The lexical control and variety comfortably align with a Band 7 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a good variety of complex structures alongside simple forms, demonstrating an ability to construct compound-complex sentences with relative ease, such as 'Although these risks should not be ignored, they can be reduced by strict rules...'. There is good control of grammar and punctuation generally, but a few noticeable errors persist. For instance, the opening sentence contains a tense agreement slip ('a wide range of cosmetic products and medical treatments are available' following 'In recent years'), and the final paragraph contains a sentence fragment ('Provided that people use these options moderately and make well-informed decisions.'). Despite these lapses, communication is never impeded, and the overall grammatical control warrants a Band 6.5.
