IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays it's possible for people to buy many products or pay for treatments that help them to look younger.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent years, a wide range of cosmetic products and medical treatments are available for those who wish to maintain youthful appearance. While some people argue that this trend places unnecessary pressures on individuals to look young, I believe it is substantially a productive transformation when these options are used sensibly.
One major advantage is that such products can enhance an individual's confidence and overall satisfaction with their appearances. Aging naturally brings changes such as wrinkles, grey hair, and loss skin, some adults may feel less comfortable with their physical appearance. Access to effective skincare, hair treatments, and cosmetic procedures can therefore give them greater self-assurance. However, certain treatments can provide practical health benefits. For instance, dental procedures can improve both person's smile and oral hygiene, while dermatological treatments can address persistent skin conditions. Additionally, the expanding beauty and healthcare industries can create employment opportunities and contribute to economic growth.
Nevertheless, there are legitimate concerns surrounding this development. The constant promotion of youthful appearances can create unrealistic expectations, particularly for younger generations. Consequently, some people may excessively concern about their looks, and they spend a considerable amount of money on unnecessary procedures. Furthermore, cosmetic surgery can involve complications, especially when treated by inexperienced practitioners. Although, these risks should not be ignored, they can be reduced by strict rules, professional medical advice, and informed consumer choices.
In conclusion, I regard the widespread availability of anti-aging products and treatments as a beneficial treatment overall. Provided that people use these options moderately and make well-informed decisions. The pros are likely to outweigh the cons.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of anti-aging products and treatments, and clearly presents a balanced position stating that it is a productive transformation when used sensibly. Your ideas are well developed and supported with relevant examples, such as dental and dermatological procedures, as well as the economic impact on the beauty industry. You have maintained a clear position throughout the essay. The arguments are extended effectively, and the conclusion neatly reiterates your stance. Overall, the task has been handled thoroughly and effectively, meeting the requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The introduction successfully outlines your position, and body paragraphs are structured logically, moving from advantages to potential concerns and risks. Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect ideas, such as 'One major advantage', 'Furthermore', and 'Nevertheless'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central theme. Referencing is generally clear and straightforward, ensuring the reader can effortlessly follow your train of thought from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You have demonstrated a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some precision and flexibility. You successfully integrated less common items and subject-specific collocations such as 'cosmetic procedures', 'dermatological treatments', and 'unrealistic expectations'. While there are a few minor vocabulary slips, such as writing 'loss skin' instead of 'loose skin' and 'excessive concern' rather than 'become excessively concerned', these do not impede communication. Your ability to discuss a nuanced topic using appropriate terminology elevates the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You have utilised a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively, demonstrating a good command of grammar overall. Sentences such as 'While some people argue that this trend places unnecessary pressures on individuals to look young, I believe it is substantially a productive transformation...' show a good grasp of complex structures. However, there are a few notable grammatical errors. For instance, the opening sentence uses a comma splice ('...treatments are available, for those...'), and the phrase 'Provided that people use these options moderately...' is a sentence fragment functioning as a dependent clause rather than a complete sentence. Despite these issues, the majority of your sentences are clear and do not impede communication.
