Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, people have access to a wide range of products and medical treatments that can make them look younger. These include skincare products, cosmetic procedures, hair treatments, and other forms of aesthetic treatment. Although there are some disadvantages associated with this trend, I believe it is generally a positive development when such products and treatments are used safely and responsibly.

One major advantage is that these treatments can improve people's confidence and self-esteem. Many people feel uncomfortable about wrinkles, grey hair, or other visible signs of ageing. Using skincare products or receiving a cosmetic treatment may help them feel more comfortable with their appearance. For example, I have seen people use simple skincare products such as moisturizers and sunscreen regularly, and they often feel more confident because they believe their skin looks healthier. For some individuals, this can have a positive effect on their social and professional lives.

Another benefit is that the beauty and healthcare industries have developed more effective treatments as technology has improved. Some treatments can address particular skin problems or physical changes associated with ageing. People now have more choices than previous generations, allowing them to decide whether a particular treatment is appropriate for them.

However, there are also disadvantages. Cosmetic treatments can be expensive, and some procedures may have side effects or health risks if they are performed incorrectly. In addition, excessive concern about looking young can create unrealistic beauty standards. People may begin to feel that ageing is something negative that must always be hidden. This can lead some individuals to spend too much money on products or undergo unnecessary procedures.

In conclusion, the availability of products and treatments that help people look younger is generally a positive development. Nevertheless, these options should be used carefully, safely, and in moderation so that people can enjoy their benefits without becoming overly concerned about their appearance.

Overall7.0

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of anti-ageing products and treatments, providing a clear overall position in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the use of moisturizers and sunscreen to boost confidence. While some points are slightly general, they are adequately extended, meeting the criteria for Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to the benefits, drawbacks, and a balanced conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively without being mechanical, for instance, transitioning between paragraphs with phrases like 'One major advantage', 'Another benefit', and 'However'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The writer uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with adequate flexibility and precision to discuss the topic. Less common lexical items, such as 'aesthetic treatment', 'self-esteem', and 'unnecessary procedures', are incorporated successfully. While the vocabulary is generally well-chosen, it relies somewhat on common phrases rather than highly sophisticated uncommon idioms or collocations, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses effectively (e.g., 'Although there are some disadvantages associated with this trend, I believe it is generally a positive development...'). Punctuation and grammar are well-controlled throughout the essay, and the majority of sentences are error-free. The occasional slips do not impede communication at all.
