Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, many people use different products and medical treatments to look younger than their real age. This includes creams, makeup, hair colour and even cosmetic surgery. In my opinion, this is mostly a positive development, although it has some negative points.

There are many benefit to looking younger. It increase a person confidence. When people look young and good they feel more confident in their daily life. For example, in a job interview a young-looking man is more active and positive. Secondly, appearance is very important. Many people work in media, acting or sales jobs where looking young is very helpful in their career.

However, there are some dissadvantages. The main problem is treatment and products are very expensive. Some people did not afford. For instance, cosmetic surgery can cost lakhs of rupees which a normal person cannot afford. Another big problem is some treatments can be dangerous for health. Some skin whitening cream are harmful because they use lots of chemicals and surgery can fail and demage the face. Moreover, people can become addicted to these things and they are never happy with their natural look. This can cause stress and mental health problems.

In conclusion, although buying products to look younger is expensive and sometimes risky, I think it is generally a good thing. It helps people to feel more confident and successful in their professional life. But people should be careful and should not spend too much money or take dangerous treatments just to look younger.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the positive and negative aspects of using anti-aging products and treatments, and clearly states an overall position in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are relevant, presenting arguments regarding confidence, professional benefits, costs, health risks, and psychological impacts. However, the length requirement of 250 words is not met, as the response is one word short at 249 words, which slightly impacts task completion. Furthermore, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the point about job interviews is rather brief and could be extended further. To reach the next level, all arguments should be thoroughly developed and the word count threshold must be strictly satisfied.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently arranged into four distinct paragraphs, each with a clear focus, such as the introduction of the topic, advantages, disadvantages, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices like 'Secondly', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used adequately to signal transitions between ideas, though referencing is occasionally slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments. To achieve a higher band, the integration of cohesive devices could be made more flexible and subtle, ensuring smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs without relying on standard connective formulas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and specific terminology such as 'cosmetic surgery', 'skin whitening cream', and 'psychological impacts'. However, there are noticeable lexical and word-form errors that prevent the score from being higher, such as 'dissadvantages' (spelling), 'benefit' instead of 'benefits', 'did not afford' instead of 'cannot afford', and 'demage' (spelling). Word choice is occasionally imprecise, such as using 'lakhs of rupees', which is culturally specific rather than standard academic vocabulary. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to expand their range of less common vocabulary and eliminate spelling and word-form errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable attempt at structuring sentences with subordinate clauses and introductory phrases. There are several error-free sentences, and the overall meaning is rarely impeded by grammatical mistakes. However, there are persistent errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'It increase a person confidence' instead of 'increases a person's confidence', 'Some skin whitening cream are' instead of 'creams are', and missing articles before singular nouns. Punctuation is generally acceptable. To progress to a higher band, the writer should produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise greater control over agreement and plurals.
