IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays it's possible for people to buy many products or pay for treatments that help them to look younger.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays people buy more products and undergo treatments to look younger. This has become a trend and neccessity in todays life. As people are struggling to look young, there have been many benefits to it; however, in order to be curious about looks, people also face financial challenges and disadvantages by using low grade products. Lets look into both perspectives.

There is nothing bad if someone wants to look younger or want to perform any procedure to make him/her look acceptable. There are many types of treatements like hydra facial, PRP, Botox, Carbon peel, RFP Carbon Laser, Bubble facial, Oxegyneo Facial and much more that people can avail. There is no harm in performing any of these procedures untill the person gets it done by a professional.

Recently in my contacts, one friend got a carbon laser facial from a salon which is not expert in this field. She got her skin burn from a certain part and was not even able to make complaint because it was her fault that she didn't get to verified source for the procedure.

She considers the low charges and extra publicity made by the salon and get impressed with AI generated pictures and decided to go there. So it is very important for us to check for authentic and capable aesthetic doctors who specifically deals in this field. They know how to manage such situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You take a broadly positive position, while recognising risks from unsafe or low-quality treatments, and the example of your friend’s skin injury is relevant and specific. However, the response does not fully answer the question: the opening promises to consider “both perspectives,” but most of the discussion focuses on safety, rather than explaining whether the wider trend is good or bad and why. The benefits of looking younger are asserted but not developed, and the conclusion does not clearly restate your overall judgement. The response is also 18 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to develop your reasons. To strengthen the answer, state your position directly and explain both the benefits and drawbacks with supporting examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable sequence: an introduction, a paragraph supporting personal choice, and an example illustrating the risks of unqualified providers. Linking phrases such as “however” and “Recently” help signal shifts. However, the overall progression is incomplete: the introduction announces “both perspectives,” but the essay does not develop a balanced discussion or provide a concluding paragraph. The two paragraphs about the salon example also overlap, and “She considers…” begins without a clear subject reference, making the connection less smooth. Some transitions, including “Lets look into both perspectives,” feel formulaic rather than guiding a developed argument. Group the safety example into one paragraph, clarify references, and finish with a conclusion that follows from the reasons presented.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-specific vocabulary, including “Botox,” “carbon laser facial,” “professional,” and “aesthetic doctors,” which makes the example concrete. There is also an attempt to express evaluation through phrases such as “financial challenges” and “low grade products.” However, several word choices and collocations are awkward or imprecise, including “curious about looks,” “look acceptable,” and “get to verified source.” Spelling errors such as “neccessity,” “treatements,” and “untill” are noticeable and reduce accuracy. The long list of procedures takes space without adding much to the argument. Aim for precise, natural phrases such as “concerned about their appearance” and “consult a qualified practitioner,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast in “There is nothing bad if someone wants to look younger” and the conditional idea “if the person gets it done by a professional.” Meaning is generally understandable, but errors in sentence structure and grammatical forms recur. For example, “people…want to perform” does not agree in number, while “She considers the low charges…and get impressed” shifts verb form and subject agreement. “who specifically deals” also needs a plural verb to match “doctors.” The sentence beginning “She considers…” is difficult to follow because its clauses are not joined clearly. Practise consistent subject–verb agreement and verb forms, and divide long or loosely connected sentences into clearer units.
