Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to appreciate your hard work which helped me in moving to my new house.

I was overwhelmed as everything went well according to my plan where I had to move my furniture along with all other belongings before quater to six in the evening and surprisingly we were all done at around 4:00pm. Because I had to leave for an important meeting to attend.

Additionally, I am really praised by Mr Smith because when he moved the refrigerator, he noticed that there was a visible thick layer of rust on the bottom of the fridge and immediately upon seeing it he grabbed a wet towel and with the help of a scrapper he managed to remove almost every dirty.

Although, I was very satisfied with your team until I noticed that I was charged extra ₹250 for tax. I remember while finalizing the deal you mentioned that it will cost me ₹2000 including tax and now I received a bill of ₹2250. I called the customer service and they said it was a mistake form of of your employee. I am very disappointed with the service.

Moreover, I would like to have an appointment with your department manager and discuss further.

Thank you,

Yesha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three requested points: the move was completed ahead of schedule, you describe Mr Smith’s help with the refrigerator, and you explain the unexpected tax charge. The details about finishing at 4:00 pm and the quoted price of ₹2,000 make the feedback specific and support your complaint. Your purpose is clear throughout, and requesting a meeting with the manager gives the letter a practical conclusion. The praise is relevant, although the cleaning incident is described more than its effect on you or why Mr Smith’s conduct was especially helpful. To strengthen the response further, explain the impact of the early completion and state more precisely what resolution you expect regarding the extra charge.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear sequence: an opening purpose, positive feedback about the move, praise for an employee, a complaint, and a closing request. Paragraphing helps distinguish the positive and negative aspects, and linking expressions such as “Additionally” and “Although” guide the reader through the points. Some connections are less smooth: “Because I had to leave for an important meeting to attend” is left as a fragment, while “Moreover” introduces the manager request without clearly linking it to the billing complaint. The contrast introduced by “Although” also leads into a long sentence with several ideas. Use complete sentences and make the relationship between the complaint and requested follow-up explicit to create more consistently controlled progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a formal feedback letter, including task-relevant expressions such as “finalizing the deal,” “customer service,” and “department manager.” Specific vocabulary like “visible thick layer of rust” helps convey the incident clearly. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “I am really praised by Mr Smith” does not express appreciation, and “remove almost every dirty” is not idiomatic. “Appreciate your hard work” is understandable but less natural here than thanking the company for its service. There are also spelling or form slips, including “quater” and “scrapper.” Aim for precise, natural phrases and check spelling and word forms, especially when describing praise and the employee’s actions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the relative clause “when he moved the refrigerator” and the contrast beginning “Although.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect sentence control. “Because I had to leave for an important meeting to attend” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence, and “I am really praised by Mr Smith” uses a passive form where the intended meaning requires an active construction. In “you mentioned that it will cost me,” the tense does not align smoothly with the past discussion. The sentence beginning “Although” also contains several clauses that would be clearer if divided. Practise complete clause structures, active and passive forms, and consistent tense choices while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
