Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you that I seek help from you company to move my furniture and possessions to my new apartment.

Firstly, I would like to thank you and your employees for helping me with the moving. I truly enjoyed your services and your staff arranged all my stuff as I wanted and it was very easy for me.

Moreover, All of your employees were very kind and helpful, therefore, one of them named David was so gentle and had a huge smile on his face every time I asked him something.

Therefore, the aspect that I do not appreciate is that moving took a lot of time as they had a lot of breaks while moving.

I would appreciate if you ask your employees to speed- up while working. It was a pleasure having your services. I would contact you if I need any other services. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours Faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain what went well, identify a specific employee (David) for praise, and highlight a negative aspect regarding the time taken for the move. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of feedback. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening sentence is more accurate; you wrote 'I seek help', which is grammatically incorrect for a past event. Additionally, while the ideas are relevant, they could be slightly more developed to provide a more professional and persuasive tone throughout the correspondence.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, the use of 'Therefore' to introduce the negative aspect is slightly unnatural in this context, as it implies a logical consequence of the previous positive point, which is not the case. Paragraphing is present, but the transitions between ideas could be smoother to improve the overall flow and coherence of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'possessions', 'arranged', and 'appreciate'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'gentle' to describe an employee, where 'courteous' or 'professional' would be more suitable in a business context. The phrase 'speed-up' is also slightly informal. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to customer service and professional feedback to demonstrate a wider and more flexible range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I seek help from you company' (should be 'your') and 'All of your employees were very kind... therefore, one of them named David was so gentle' (the use of 'therefore' here is grammatically awkward). There are also minor punctuation issues, such as the hyphen in 'speed- up'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of linking words.
