Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Jonathan
I am writing this letter to express my satisfaction towards the service for moving our furniture and possessions. I would like to appreciate the service especially for moving the fragile items without any damage. In addition, the move-in and move-out process was quite smooth and convenient for us as it was on time and we did not have to rush for anything.
I would like to appreciate Mr. Daquing for his exceptional efforts for checking all the furniture. As I was pregnant during that time, I was not able to help for lifting any items and he was extremely careful and made sure that our process would be quick and convenient.
Apart from this, I would like to raise concern for the price of fuel which was considerably high. We had noted approximately 128 kms on the truck, though we have to pay for 150 kms. We are not sure why the extra miles have been calculated. If you have time please look into this issue.
Thanking you for the great service.
Yours Lovingly

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the positive aspects of the move, specifically mentioning the care taken with fragile items. You also effectively praised Mr. Daquing, providing a personal context that makes the praise feel genuine. Finally, you raised a clear concern regarding the fuel charges. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening salutation 'Dear Jonathan' contradicts the instruction to begin with 'Dear Sir or Madam'. This is a minor procedural error, but otherwise, the task is fully accomplished with well-developed ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use transition signals such as 'In addition', 'Apart from this', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the text. The progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points. While some of the cohesive devices are standard, they are used accurately and contribute to a smooth flow of information throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
Your vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for a formal complaint or feedback letter. Phrases like 'exceptional efforts', 'considerably high', and 'raise concern' demonstrate a good command of language. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common vocabulary related to logistics or customer service. Overall, the range is sufficient to convey your message clearly and professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good control of sentence structure, using a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively. For example, 'As I was pregnant during that time, I was not able to help...' shows a good grasp of subordinate clauses. There are a few minor slips, such as 'express my satisfaction towards' (usually 'with') and 'help for lifting' (should be 'help with lifting'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not cause any confusion for the reader. The majority of your sentences are error-free.
