Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to provide feedback regarding the moving services I got from your company last Tuesday, August 25th, when I shifted to my new apartment at 325 west broadway.

Overall, the moving went very smoothly. The team arrived at the provided location on time, then they packed my fragile kitchenware and electronics with great care. Thanks to their service as they have loaded all of my belongings carefully.

I would like to highly praise one of your employee, Ravi, who went above and beyond to help me. When we arrived at my apartment, we realized that one sofa is not going to fit to my living room door, but Ravi calmly took charge of the situation, safely removed the door hinges, and moved the sofa inside without causing any damage to the walls or sofa. His work and nature was outstanding.

However, I must mention one aspect of the service that I was not satisfied with. The moving truck appeared to be quite old as it was having oil leakage and small amount of oil was leaked to my new landlord's driveway. I had to provide cleaning services to it. I strongly recommend that you should service your fleet regularly.

Yours Faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explained the positive aspects of the move, provided a specific example of an employee's helpfulness, and identified a clear issue regarding the maintenance of the moving truck. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of feedback. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing enough detail to satisfy the task requirements. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the closing is appropriate for the context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different aspects of the feedback. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'Thanks to' are used to guide the reader through the text. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the letter. The structure is coherent and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a high band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal letter, such as 'fragile kitchenware', 'above and beyond', and 'outstanding'. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and natural, there are minor issues with collocation, such as 'shifted to my new apartment' (moved is more standard) and 'small amount of oil was leaked' (the passive voice here is slightly awkward). However, these minor slips do not impede communication, and you successfully use vocabulary to convey your message clearly and professionally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'one of your employee' (should be 'employees') and 'one sofa is not going to fit to my living room door' (should be 'would not fit through'). Additionally, 'His work and nature was outstanding' contains a subject-verb agreement error. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free, and the meaning is never obscured. You show a good command of tense usage throughout the letter.
