Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter in response to the feedback you asked for regarding the services provided by your company.

My name is Gurpreet Kaur. I have booked your services of Packers and Movers to shift my household items from Cornerstone to Cityscape. I appreciate your services as on the day of shifting, your employees helped us a lot in packaging of items for their safe transfer. Moreover, loading and unloading of the items is also very smooth and quick.

I want to mention one employee of yours, named Sameer , is very cooperative and helpful because he helps us a lot in managing household furniture as it is quite heavy. It was very difficult to shift it to first floor so that they can be loaded in truck.

There is only one problem I want to state here , which is delay in paper work. A lot of time got wasted in mentioning items which a customer need to be transferred.

Hope you will take my feedback positively.

Yours Sincerely,

Gurpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the positive aspects of the move, the praise for a specific employee, and the complaint regarding paperwork. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the complaint about paperwork is mentioned but could be expanded to explain why it was problematic or how it affected the overall experience. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is not just mentioned but fully developed with specific details or consequences to demonstrate a more comprehensive response to the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'There is only one problem' helps guide the reader through the text. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by separating the introduction and the specific feedback points more clearly. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the praise for Sameer and the complaint about paperwork could be smoother to create a more cohesive narrative.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. You use some relevant topic-specific vocabulary such as 'packaging', 'loading', 'unloading', and 'household items'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'shifting' which is often used in a more informal context compared to 'moving'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and a wider variety of descriptive adjectives to express your satisfaction and dissatisfaction more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as tense inconsistencies ('he helps us' instead of 'he helped us') and minor punctuation issues. Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'A lot of time got wasted in mentioning items which a customer need to be transferred'. To achieve a higher band, focus on maintaining consistent verb tenses and ensuring subject-verb agreement. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while reducing these minor errors will significantly improve your score.
