Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my immense gratitude with the services provided by your company, The Movers Co. I booked an all-day service on 28th April for my relocation from Haslingden to Manchester, and was assisted by a pair of gentlemen who exceeded my expectations.

What I found particularly impressive was the adeptness of your staff. My fragile crockery was packed in cardboard boxes and I was fearful for its safe transportation. However, your crew members took good care of it, and it all reached in pristine condition.

I was particularly impressed by Amir, who was able to lift the furniture without needing any assistance. In addition, he was very agile and efficient, clearing out an entire room in half an hour.

That being said, I would like to bring to your attention to the size of the moving van. We had booked a large size vehicle, however, the van we were allocated was very small. Whilst it did the job, it was not what we had requested. I would appreciate if van sizes are updated on your website urgently, as this could be misleading to other customers.

Overall, I am very happy with the service provided, and will definitely be a returning customer.

Yours faithfully,

Zainab Junaid

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explained the positive aspects of the move, specifically mentioning the care taken with your fragile items. You also effectively praised a specific employee, Amir, and provided a clear, constructive complaint regarding the discrepancy in the van size. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of feedback, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the prompt, ensuring the reader understands both your satisfaction and your specific concern.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which makes the letter easy to follow. You have used appropriate cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'That being said', and 'Whilst', which help to connect your thoughts smoothly. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The transition between the positive feedback and the complaint is handled well, maintaining a professional tone throughout the correspondence.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is well-suited to the context of a formal letter. Phrases like 'immense gratitude', 'exceeded my expectations', 'adeptness of your staff', and 'pristine condition' show a strong command of language. There is a minor collocation error in 'bring to your attention to the size', where the second 'to' is unnecessary, but this does not impede communication. You use precise terminology related to moving services, which adds to the professional quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your writing displays a good variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences that are generally accurate. For example, 'Whilst it did the job, it was not what we had requested' is a well-constructed complex sentence. There are very few grammatical errors; the sentence 'I would appreciate if van sizes are updated' would be more natural as 'I would appreciate it if the van sizes were updated'. However, these are minor slips that do not affect the clarity of your message. The majority of your sentences are error-free.
