Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my deep satisfaction with the services your company provided on the day of my move from the basement to my new apartment.

I was looking for moving companies a month ago, and suddenly, while scrolling, I saw an advertisement for your company on the internet. I decided to give you guys a call, and my queries were handled professionally by your staff, which I liked most. Other than that, the booking went smoothly, and on the day of moving, the way your staff handled things gave me real peace of mind. Because most of the kitchen items are fragile.

The person named Kamal was so helpful, as he had all the things handy, such as scissors, tape, and cardboard boxes. In addition to this, I liked the way he managed all the other staff and communicated with drivers.

I just wanted to review one of the things that I do not like at all: My apartment from the basement is not that far, but drivers still went on the route that took longer just to increase the miles, which was not mentioned earlier. I want you to clear these things with employees before starting the work, so no inconvenience happens.

Yours faithfully,

Roop

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain what went well on the day of the move, such as the smooth handling of your items and the professionalism of the staff. You also praise a specific employee, Kamal, highlighting his helpfulness with equipment and management skills. Finally, you mention an aspect you were unhappy with, specifically the drivers taking a longer route to increase mileage. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint/feedback letter, starting and ending with the correct conventions. All parts of the task are well-addressed, meeting the criteria for a solid score in this area.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised and flows reasonably well from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing positive aspects, the praised employee, and the negative aspect, concluding appropriately. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this' and 'Other than that'. However, paragraphing could be improved; for instance, the sentence 'Because most of the kitchen items are fragile' is written as a fragment and should be integrated into the previous sentence. Additionally, referencing is occasionally slightly informal ('give you guys a call'), but overall, the message is coherent and easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general correspondence task, using terms like 'express my deep satisfaction', 'professionally', 'fragile', and 'inconvenience'. However, there are some awkward lexical choices and phrasing, such as 'review one of the things that I do not like at all' (instead of 'complain about' or 'mention an issue'), and 'clear these things with employees'. Furthermore, colloquialisms like 'give you guys a call' detract slightly from the formal tone required for a complaint letter. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses such as 'when scrolling, I saw an advertisement' and 'as he had all the things handy'. However, there are notable grammatical errors and punctuation issues. For example, 'Because most of the kitchen items are fragile' is a sentence fragment. There is also a run-on structure in 'My apartment from the basement is not that far, but drivers still went on the route that took longer just to increase the miles, which was not mentioned earlier.' Despite these errors, they rarely impede overall communication.
