Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to provide feedback about the moving service provided by the company. I recently hired you guys to move furniture from old house to my new apartment and would like to explain the situation.

Firstly, the most important thing which impressed me a lot is the way of packaging. Because of this I didn’t find any difficulty to unpack my stuff, as every box has labels and in sequence. In addition to this, the method of handling the fragile item was also considerable.

Mr. Smith, the supervisor got some great skills of management. He showed patience and great temperament while moving, because it is not easy to maintain the same behaviour even if someone is doing any mistake.

However, there is one thing which disappointed me is the time management. Most of your employees arrived late on site, and because of this I had to pay more to the van rental company. I would appreciate it if you could look into this matter and resolve it.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Sukh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all requirements of the prompt effectively. You successfully explained what went well by highlighting the packaging and fragile item handling. You also praised a specific employee, Mr. Smith, noting his management skills and patience, and clearly mentioned the negative aspect regarding poor time management and employees arriving late. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint/feedback letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. All bullet points are fully addressed, and the ideas are adequately developed to meet the task requirements successfully, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard letter conventions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the positive feedback, the employee praise, and the complaint. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition to this', and 'However' are used to guide the reader through your arguments. While some of the cohesive links are a bit standard or mechanical, the overall progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common phrasing such as 'fragile item', 'great temperament', and 'time management'. However, there are some awkward collocations and slightly unnatural expressions, such as 'hired you guys' (too informal for this context), 'got some great skills of management' (rather conversational), and 'doing any mistake' instead of 'making a mistake'. Despite these minor lexical inaccuracies, the meaning remains clear throughout, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional-like structures and multi-clause sentences ('Because of this I didn’t find any difficulty...'). There are some grammatical errors and awkward structures present, for example, 'the supervisor got some great skills' (informal verb choice), 'the way of packaging' instead of 'the packaging', and 'there is one thing which disappointed me is' (grammatical mismatch). However, these errors do not impede communication, and the overall meaning of your sentences remains clear to the reader.
