Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to thank you for the excellent survice provided by your removel company when I moved to my new appartment last week.

Overall, I was very pleased with how smoothly everything went on that day. The team arrived prompty, handled my furniture with great care, worked efficiently throughout the move. They were also polite and cooperative, which made what could have been a stressful day much easier.

I would particularly appreciate one of your employee, Mr. James Wilson. He was very helpful and professionally. He carfully wrapped or packed all the item, checked that everything loaded safely and also facilitated us to arrange my furniture in my flat. Their friendly attitide was greatly appreciated.

However, I was slightly disappointed that the delivery was delayed by almost two hours. Although, I understand that unexpected problem can occur, I would appreciate being informed about the delay earlier.

Despite this issue, I was satisfied with the service and would recommend your company to others.

Yours faithfully,

Alex

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student has successfully covered all parts of the task. The letter clearly explains what went well on the day of the move, praises a specific employee (Mr. James Wilson), and mentions the negative aspect regarding the two-hour delivery delay. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter of feedback, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently extended, fulfilling all requirements of the prompt effectively. There are no missing bullet points or underdeveloped sections. Therefore, this response comfortably aligns with the Band 7 descriptors for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard letter conventions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as general satisfaction, praise for the employee, and the issue with the delay. Cohesive devices are handled adequately through transitional phrases like "Overall," "However," and "Despite this issue." While some referencing and connectors could be slightly more fluid to reach the higher bands, the overall progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow. This performance is consistent with the Band 6.5 or 7.0 descriptors, and a score of 6.5 is awarded to reflect minor mechanical aspects.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for this task type, using words and phrases like "efficiently throughout the move," "cooperative," and "facilitated." However, there are a few noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as "survice" instead of "service," "removel" instead of "removal," "appartment" instead of "apartment," and "prompty" instead of "promptly." Additionally, phrases like "facilitated us to arrange" are slightly unnatural in collocation. Because these errors do not impede communication, the response fits well within the Band 6 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as in "which made what could have been a stressful day much easier." There are some grammatical and word form inaccuracies, such as "very helpful and professionally" (adjective/adverb confusion) and "checked that everything loaded safely" (passive voice omission). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. This demonstrates the control and error frequency characteristic of Band 6.0.
