Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to thank you for the excellent service provided by your removal company when I moved to my new apartment last week.

Overall, I was very pleased with how smoothly everything went on that day. The team arrived promptly, handled my furniture with great care, and worked efficiently throughout the move. They were also polite and cooperative, which made what could have been a stressful day much easier.

I would particularly commend one of your employees, Mr. James Wilson. He was very helpful and professional. He carefully wrapped or packed all the items, checked that everything was loaded safely and also facilitated us to arrange my furniture in my flat. Their friendly attitude was greatly appreciated.

However, I was slightly disappointed that the delivery was delayed by almost two hours. Although I understand that unexpected problems can occur, I would appreciate being informed about the delay earlier.

Despite this issue, I was satisfied with the service and would recommend your company to others.

Yours faithfully,

Alex

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task prompt in a clear and appropriate manner. You successfully explained what went well on the day of the move by mentioning that the team arrived promptly, handled furniture carefully, and worked efficiently. Furthermore, you effectively praised a specific employee, Mr. James Wilson, noting his professionalism and helpfulness in packing and loading items. You also successfully included the required negative aspect by pointing out the two-hour delivery delay and suggesting you should have been informed earlier. The tone is appropriately polite and formal for a complaint and feedback letter, and the purpose is sustained throughout. Ideas are well-developed and all bullet points are thoroughly covered without any omissions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently sequenced, starting with an opening statement of purpose, moving through the positive aspects, the employee praise, the complaint about the delay, and finally concluding with a balanced summary. Paragraphing is used effectively and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the letter. Cohesive devices are managed well, using transition words and referencing correctly, such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'Although I understand that unexpected problems can occur', ensuring the text flows smoothly from one idea to the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is sufficient and appropriate for a general correspondence task. You successfully employ a range of vocabulary relevant to moving house and customer service, including terms like 'promptly', 'efficiently', 'cooperative', 'professional', and 'facilitated'. While most word choices are accurate, there is a minor collocation slip in the phrase 'facilitated us to arrange my furniture', where 'helped us arrange' or 'assisted us with arranging' would be more natural. However, this minor error does not impede communication. Spelling and word choice are generally accurate, showing a good level of control over common and moderately sophisticated lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You demonstrate control over grammatical forms, successfully utilizing subordinate clauses such as 'when I moved to my new apartment last week' and 'which made what could have been a stressful day much easier.' The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout the letter. While there is a slight awkwardness in the verb complementation of 'facilitated us to arrange', grammatical accuracy remains high overall, and errors are rare and non-systematic. The control over tense and agreement is consistent and appropriate for the task.
