Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to thank you for the excellent service provided by your removal company when I moved to my new apartment last week.

Overall, I was very pleased with how smoothly everything went on that day. The team arrived promptly, handled my furniture with great care, and worked efficiently throughout the move. They were also polite and cooperative, which made what could have been a stressful day much easier.

I would particularly commend one of your employees, Mr. James Wilson. He was very helpful and professional. He carefully wrapped or packed all the items, checked that everything was loaded safely and helped us arrange my furniture in my flat. Their friendly attitude was greatly appreciated.

However, I was slightly disappointed that the delivery was delayed by almost two hours. Although I understand that unexpected problems can occur, I would appreciate being informed about the delay earlier.

Despite this issue, I was satisfied with the service and would recommend your company to others.

Yours faithfully,

Alex

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The student has successfully covered all parts of the task prompt. The letter begins with the appropriate salutation and clearly explains what went well on the day of the move, noting that the team arrived promptly and handled belongings with care. Additionally, the writer effectively praises a specific employee, Mr. James Wilson, detailing his helpful and professional attitude. The final required bullet point is also addressed by mentioning the two-hour delivery delay as the aspect of the service that was unsatisfactory. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal complaint and feedback letter, and the ideas are fully developed and relevant to the prompt, easily meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter demonstrates a clear and logical progression of ideas from start to finish. The paragraphs are well-structured, with a distinct introduction, body paragraphs addressing each prompt requirement in order, and a brief concluding remark. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'Although' are used naturally and effectively to connect sentences and clauses. Referencing is clear throughout, and the overall arrangement ensures that the reader can easily follow the narrative of the moving day, the praise, and the subsequent complaint without any confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient and natural range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal feedback letter. Phrases such as 'handled my furniture with great care', 'worked efficiently', and 'particularly commend' demonstrate good control over lexical items and collocations. Less common vocabulary is integrated smoothly, such as 'promptly' and 'unexpected problems'. There are no noticeable spelling or word-choice errors, and the vocabulary chosen allows the writer to convey their message with precision and clarity, aligning well with the descriptors for this band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response exhibits a strong control of grammatical structures, successfully blending simple and complex sentences. Examples of complex structures include concessive clauses such as 'Although I understand that unexpected problems can occur, I would appreciate being informed about the delay earlier.' The vast majority of sentences are completely error-free, with accurate punctuation and tense usage throughout. While the range of structures is sufficient rather than exceptionally wide, the high level of accuracy and good command of grammar contribute to a very natural and fluent read.
