Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

The purpose of my writing today is to provide honest feedback about the service provided by your hardworking team in moving my furniture and belongings to my new house located at the Royal West Street.

I had found the entire team to be properly trainned, in fact, using appropriate lifting methods while shifting the valuables. Another thing that stood out for me was the punctuality of the labourers. The entire time-consuming task was completed satisfactorily within the deadline provided by the company.

I would also like to apraise Mr. Sumit Patel for going above and beyond in terms of customer service, especially when providing guidance to the workers. In addition, he gave me some extremely useful suggestions on how the orientation of the furniture could possibly result in having an extra space.

Nonetheless, what I was not expecting was my favourite mirror to be accidentally broken by one of the team members. Regardless, I would hope that proper coaching must be given to the accused.

Thank you for your service and time.

Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student has successfully covered all bullet points outlined in the task instructions. The letter explains what went well during the move, specifically highlighting the punctuality and appropriate lifting methods used by the labourers. Furthermore, the writer successfully praises a specific employee, Mr. Sumit Patel, for his exceptional customer service and helpful suggestions. Finally, the third bullet point is effectively addressed by mentioning an aspect of the service that was unsatisfactory—the accidental breakage of the favourite mirror. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the tone remains appropriate for a formal complaint and feedback letter. The content is fully developed and well-realized, meeting the Band 7 criteria for successfully addressing all parts of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the purpose of the letter to positive aspects, specific praise, and finally the negative aspect. Paragraphing is used effectively. The student employs appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Another thing that stood out', 'I would also like to', and 'Nonetheless' to guide the reader through the text. Referencing is generally clear and straightforward, ensuring the message is communicated without confusion. This aligns well with the requirements for a Band 7 score in coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, utilizing phrases such as 'hardworking team', 'time-consuming task', and 'orientation of the furniture'. There are, however, a few minor lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'trainned' (trained) and 'apraise' instead of 'appraise' or 'praise'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows the writer to convey their ideas clearly and appropriately. The lexical resource is characteristic of a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6 performance, leaning toward Band 6 due to the spelling slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer showcases a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and participial phrases such as 'moving my furniture and belongings to my new house located at the Royal West Street'. There are some grammatical slips and awkward phrasings, such as 'I had found the entire team to be properly trainned' (simple past would be more natural) and 'I would hope that proper coaching must be given'. However, these errors do not impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout the response. The control of grammar and punctuation is generally sound, supporting a Band 6.5 rating.
