Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to provide my feedback on the recent move that I used on the 30th of last month.
Overall, I am really satisfied with the service provided by your staff and I would like to mention an instance where your staff worked above and beyond. On our way to our new apartment, there was an accident that delayed our trip by an hour. However, the driver and team stayed positive and helped me with the move without rushing things.
In addition to the above, I would like to give a five-star rating for the service delivered by Sam, who handled my kitchen appliances and pots carefully. Last time when I was moving the person who handled them damaged all of my plates and mugs. But Sam was really understanding and responsible.
Further, I would like to bring to your attention that the team came late to pick up my furniture and possessions, which made me wait thirty minutes. I hope you will advise them on this matter.
Thank you.
Yours faithfully,
Yumi G

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You explained what went well by describing how the team handled a traffic accident positively and professionally. You praised a specific employee, Sam, for carefully handling your kitchen appliances and contrasting this with a past negative experience. Finally, you mentioned an aspect of the service you were unhappy with, specifically the thirty-minute delay in the team arriving to pick up your belongings. The tone is appropriately polite and formal for a complaint and feedback letter, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. All requirements are fully covered, placing this response at Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
Your letter shows a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: introduction, positive aspects, employee praise, and the negative aspect. You use appropriate cohesive devices to link your ideas, such as 'Overall', 'In addition to the above', and 'Further'. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate each point of your feedback. Referencing is generally clear, though paragraph transitions could be slightly more seamless to push into higher bands. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 7.0 performance.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with clarity and some precision. Phrases such as 'above and beyond', 'five-star rating', and 'bring to your attention' show an awareness of appropriate collocation and style. While much of the vocabulary is standard and functional rather than advanced (e.g., using 'really satisfied' or 'really understanding'), it is adequate for the task. There are no major lexical errors that impede communication. This reflects the descriptors for Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You display a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using subordinate clauses in 'On our way to our new apartment, there was an accident that delayed our trip by an hour.' Your control of past tenses is generally reliable ('was', 'stayed', 'handled', 'came'). There are occasional minor awkwardness issues, such as 'the recent move that I used on the 30th', but grammar and punctuation are generally accurate and rarely impede communication. This fits comfortably into the Band 7.0 criteria.
