Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to provide my feedback on the recent move that I used on the 30th of last month.

Overall, I am really satisfied with the service provided by your staff and I would like to mention an instance where your staff worked above and beyond. On our way to our new apartment, there was an accident that delayed our trip by an hour. However, the driver and team stayed positive and helped me with the move without rushing things.

In addition to the above, I would like to give a five-star rating for the service delivered by Sam, who handled my kitchen appliances and pots carefully. Last time when I was moving the person who handled them damaged all of my plates and mugs. But Sam was really understanding and responsible.

Further, I would like to bring to your attention that the team came late to pick up my furniture and possessions, which made me wait thirty minutes. I hope you will advise them on this matter.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Yumi G

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively covers all bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explained what went well on the day, such as the team staying positive and helpful despite a traffic accident delay. Furthermore, you praised a specific employee named Sam for handling your kitchen appliances carefully, and you successfully mentioned an aspect of the service you were not happy with, which was the thirty-minute delay in pick-up time. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the tone is appropriate for a formal complaint and feedback letter. The content is fully developed and well-realized, meeting all criteria for a Band 7.0 or higher.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

Your letter is well-organized with a clear overall logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct point: the general overview and positive event in paragraph two, the praise for Sam in paragraph three, and the negative aspect in paragraph four. You used appropriate cohesive devices and transition phrases such as 'Overall', 'In addition to the above', and 'Further' to connect your ideas smoothly. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader effortlessly through your feedback and complaint. This demonstrates the organizational control expected at Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrated a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision, such as 'satisfied with the service', 'above and beyond', and 'kitchen appliances'. You also attempted less common expressions like 'responsible' and 'bring to your attention'. While most word choices are natural and accurate, there are minor awkwardness issues, such as 'the recent move that I used', which could be phrased more natively. However, your vocabulary is more than adequate for this task and allows your message to be conveyed clearly, aligning with the Band 7.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You utilized a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses effectively (e.g., 'On our way to our new apartment, there was an accident that delayed our trip...'). The majority of your sentences are grammatically accurate, and punctuation is well-controlled. There are a few minor slips, such as 'the recent move that I used' where prepositional collocation could be tighter, but these errors do not impede communication at all. Your control of grammar reflects a solid Band 7.0 performance.
