Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to provide detailed feedback regarding the furniture moving service I received from your company last week.

I got the service from your company to move furniture to my new house, which is over 50 km away from Mississauga. Your employees came to the exact location on time and were extra careful with the things they moved, especially fragile items. Furthermore, they also helped us clean our old place, which was highly admirable.

I would especially like to mention one of your employees, Adam, as he provided us with immense support in every possible way. He worked hard to move our heavy furniture to the new house and also helped us fix all the beds and cupboards.

Even though I highly appreciate the service your company provided us on the moving day, I wanted to express my dissatisfaction regarding an incident that occurred with your customer service centre. I requested them to reschedule my moving date due to unavoidable circumstances. The lady who answered the phone informed me that she was unable to help me regarding that matter and hung up the phone, which was not acceptable.

I hope this feedback assists you in improving your service further. Thank you so much for providing a great service.

I wish you good luck.

Yours sincerely,

Vishmi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The candidate has fully satisfied all the requirements of the prompt by covering every bullet point clearly. The letter begins appropriately with the requested salutation and successfully explains what went well on the moving day, such as punctuality and careful handling of fragile items. Furthermore, the writer singles out a specific employee, Adam, praising his exceptional support and hard work with heavy furniture. Finally, the letter clearly outlines the negative aspect of the service by detailing the unprofessional behavior of a customer service representative who hung up the phone. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal complaint and feedback letter, and the ideas are fully developed without any missing elements, resulting in a strong performance for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas from the introductory purpose statement to positive feedback, individual praise, negative feedback, and a polite conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively and appropriately, with each paragraph dedicated to a distinct theme or bullet point. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'I would especially like to mention', and 'Even though' are employed naturally to connect sentences and clauses. Although referencing is mostly clear and easy to follow, a slightly wider variety of advanced cohesive links could elevate it further, but overall cohesion is well managed and contributes to smooth readability throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for a general correspondence task. Phrases such as 'unavoidable circumstances', 'detailed feedback', and 'immense support' showcase a good control of functional language. Less common vocabulary items are attempted with some success, though there are minor inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'I got the service from your company', which sounds slightly informal compared to 'I utilized your company's services'. Nevertheless, spelling and word choice are accurate enough to communicate the message clearly without causing any strain for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The letter features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses introduced by conjunctions like 'even though', 'because', and 'which'. Grammatical control is generally strong; the majority of sentences are error-free and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. While there are a few minor structural slips, such as 'help me regarding that matter' instead of 'help me with that matter', these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication at all. The writing exhibits a reliable grasp of past tense narration, which is essential for describing a past event like moving house.
