Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to express my sincere gratitude with the help I received form your company and point out a few observations I made. I came across your instagram page on social media and contacted you after I went through your reviews.

First of all, I was really impressed with your service and professionalism. Although intially I had doubts, you surpassed my expectations. My new apartment is located in Accra which is quite a distance from my previous apartment.I reached out to a few companies but the cost was very expensive.I later contacted you and realized your charge was reasonable and your service was service exceptional. Andy, one of your employees, was very hardworking. He helped my children pack their toys and clothes in their uitcases although it was not in his job description.

However, a few of your employees arrived late. This delayed the whole process. In conclusion, I loved your service and I will highly recommend your company.

Yours Faithfully,

Emmanuella.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The candidate has successfully covered all bullet points required by the prompt. The letter clearly explains what went well during the move, particularly mentioning the reasonable cost and exceptional service. It praises a specific employee, Andy, by detailing how he helped the children pack their toys and clothes. Additionally, the negative aspect of the service—the employees arriving late and delaying the process—is clearly stated. The tone is appropriate for a formal feedback letter, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. However, some minor details like mentioning the Instagram page are slightly tangential, but overall, the task is well handled and meets the requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter maintains a clear overall progression, starting with an introductory statement of purpose, moving through the positive and negative feedback points, and ending with a polite conclusion. Paragraphing is generally used, though the body paragraphs could be better separated (for instance, splitting the positive remarks from the negative critique into distinct paragraphs). Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Although', and 'However' are employed to connect ideas, though referencing and transitions feel a bit mechanical at times. Despite these minor issues, the progression of information remains logical and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The candidate uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully conveying meaning with terms like 'sincere gratitude', 'professionalism', 'surpassed my expectations', and 'reasonable'. There are a few spelling and typographical slips, such as 'intially' instead of 'initially', 'form' instead of 'from', and 'uitcases' instead of 'suitcases'. While some less common lexical items are attempted, there are occasional word-choice inaccuracies, such as saying the charge was very expensive instead of the cost. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the ideas clearly without impeding the reader's understanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as concessive clauses ('Although initially I had doubts, you surpassed my expectations') and relative clauses ('My new apartment is located in Accra which is quite a distance'). Control over grammar is generally decent, but there are some recurring errors, particularly missing articles ('although it was not in his job description' is correct, but 'service was service exceptional' contains a glaring typo/repetition). Punctuation and spacing issues also appear frequently, such as missing spaces after periods ('expectations. My', 'Accra which', 'process.In'). These errors do not impede communication, placing the grammar comfortably in the band 6 range.
