Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I recently availed your services and was requested to provide feedback on your services. I understand the significance of a feedback, as it is a genuine way to improve and grow. Therefore, I would try my best to be as precise as possible.

I must say that your team takes punctuality very seriously. It reached my apartment exactly at the promised time. Additionally, I've never come across such an experts before. They were too good with the handling of the furniture. A lot of my possessions involved brittle objects and I was amazed that none of them got damaged, which was very uncommon for me, considering my past removal experiences.

Moreover, Smith was there who was very helpful. I was not very well prepared before your team arrived and Smith did not show any reluctance in helping me in packing some of the remaining boxes. He surely went beyond his role, which I really appreciate.

However, the only thing that made me upset was that they took very long in transfering my belongings to my new apartment. It was supposed to be a two hours task but they took around five hours. As a result, I had to postpone the dinner I planned for my friends and family on that day. Therefore, I was not happy with the services of your driver. I would suggest you to take some action, as this can be very upsetting for your customers.

Further to this, overall I will give you a rating of seven. This could easily go to nine with a better driver.

Many thanks,

Asad

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the task instructions. The student clearly explains what went well on the day of the move by highlighting the team's punctuality and careful handling of fragile possessions. Furthermore, an employee named Smith is specifically praised for going above and beyond his duties to help with packing. Finally, the negative aspect of the service is clearly mentioned, specifically the excessive delay caused by the driver, which disrupted the writer's evening plans. The tone of the letter is appropriate for a formal complaint and feedback request, and all required elements are fully developed, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the feedback, such as punctuality, employee praise, and the negative issue. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Therefore' are employed to guide the reader smoothly through the text, although some transitions feel slightly formulaic. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall letter flows well from the opening greeting to the final sign-off, maintaining a consistent epistolary structure suitable for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'takes punctuality very seriously', 'brittle objects', and 'went beyond his role' communicate ideas effectively. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and non-standard collocations, such as 'such an experts' (which should be 'such experts') and 'transfering' (spelled with a single 'r'). Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is varied enough to allow for some precision, and meaning is never obscured, aligning well with the characteristics of a Band 6.5 or 7.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The writer displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating conditional structures and subordinate clauses effectively (e.g., 'I understand the significance of a feedback, as it is a genuine way to improve and grow'). There are some minor grammatical errors, such as treating 'feedback' as an uncountable noun with an indefinite article ('a feedback') and a minor preposition choice in 'availability of your services'. However, the majority of sentences are clear and grammatically sound, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout, ensuring that communication is never impeded.
