Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are feeling well. I am writing to express my satisfaction with the service you provided.

Firstly, I want to explain that everything went very well because you followed all my instructions. Everything you did was very smooth and in perfect way.

Secondly, I want to give a tip to those person who helped me because he did their job very well, and none of my material was broken. He is a very polite and down-to-earth person even he did an extra for me.

I want to express my dissatisfaction, which I really did not like. Your company is not punctual; please be on time next time. I was informed that you would come at 9 a.m.; however, you came at about 10. Overall, your company provides excellent service except for this. I hope your company works on it.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Your Customer,

Hapz

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The candidate successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. The letter begins with an appropriate greeting and explains what went well on moving day, mentioning that 'you followed all my instructions'. It praises an employee who was particularly helpful, noting that he was 'polite and down-to-earth' and handled materials with care. Additionally, it highlights an aspect of the service that was unsatisfactory—specifically, the punctuality issue where the company arrived an hour late ('you came at about 10'). The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal complaint/feedback letter, and the purpose is clearly communicated throughout. The response addresses all aspects of the task adequately, aligning well with the requirements for a Band 6.0 or solid Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. The writer uses basic transition markers to structure the response, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Overall'. Paragraphing is used to separate different points, starting with an introductory statement, followed by distinct paragraphs for positive feedback, employee praise, and the complaint, ending with a polite sign-off. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical due to repetitive transitional structures. Referencing is mostly clear, though some pronouns like 'he did their job' show minor inconsistencies in agreement. Overall, the organization is clear and easy to follow, meeting the criteria for Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express satisfaction, give praise, and articulate a complaint. Expressions like 'down-to-earth', 'express my satisfaction', and 'punctual' demonstrate a satisfactory working vocabulary. However, there are notable limitations and word-choice errors, such as 'give a tip to those person' instead of 'compliment that person', and 'none of my material was broken' instead of 'belongings' or 'possessions'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, but inaccuracies in collocation and phrasing prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient to convey the intended message without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing to express my satisfaction...' and 'I was informed that you would come at 9 a.m.; however, you came at about 10.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text, including 'in perfect way', 'those person', and 'even he did an extra for me'. Pronoun agreement issues also occur, such as switching between singular and plural ('those person who helped me because he did their job'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear and communication is not impeded. The control over simple sentences is decent, while attempts at complex structures contain frequent minor slips, aligning with Band 5.5 descriptors.
