Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to provide feedback regarding your removal company services which I took last week to move my furniture to the new apartment.

On the day of moving everything went well, I received four staff members from your company and they were at my apartment sharp 9 am. Then they load all my belongings to the truck and moved carefully.

I would like to appreciate all team members especially Ram who was the team leader. He was very down to earth and followed my instructions very carefully. At the end of the day we had a lunch together at our home and I also appreciate workers with a small tip.

However, I did not like the insurance policy of the service. Actually, one of the employees broke the TV frame by mistake. But when I requested for insurance claim they informed I have to pay the deductible amount which was almost half of the broken frame. The main part was I did not aware about it when I payed initial amount for the services which I received.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Parminder

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The candidate successfully covers all bullet points required in the task instructions. The letter begins by explaining what went well on the day of the move, noting that four staff members arrived promptly at 9 am and handled belongings carefully. Next, an employee named Ram is praised for being down-to-earth and following instructions closely. Finally, an aspect of the service that caused dissatisfaction is clearly mentioned, specifically regarding the insurance policy and the unexpected deductible fee for a broken TV frame. All parts of the prompt are fully addressed with a consistent and appropriate tone for a formal complaint/feedback letter. Therefore, this performance meets the criteria for Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear overall logical organization, progressing naturally from the introduction to positive feedback, specific praise, the complaint, and a polite closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as moving from the positive aspects to the negative service experience. Cohesive devices like 'Then', 'However', and referencing pronouns are used, although referencing is occasionally slightly ambiguous ('the main part was I did not aware about it'). Overall, the cohesion supports clear communication throughout the letter, aligning well with the Band 6.0 or 6.5 descriptors; given the clear logical progression, a Band 6.5 is appropriate.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday service feedback concepts such as 'removal company', 'belongings', 'insurance claim', and 'deductible amount'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'I received four staff members' instead of 'I was sent four staff members', 'we had a lunch together' omitting the article, and 'I did not aware' instead of 'I was not aware'. These lexical slips do not impede communication, placing the response securely in the Band 6.0 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing to provide feedback regarding your removal company services which I took last week...' and 'Actually, one of the employees broke the TV frame by mistake.' There are several grammatical errors present, including tense consistency and preposition usage ('load all my belongings' instead of 'loaded', 'when I payed' instead of 'paid', and 'informed I have to pay' missing a relative pronoun/conjunction). While these errors occur frequently, they do not impede the reader's understanding of the message, matching the criteria for a Band 6.0.
