Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task prompt. In the second paragraph, the writer explains what went well on the day of the move, noting that the removal staff were punctual, polite, and handled furniture carefully. In the third paragraph, a specific employee named Nathan is praised for his helpfulness and strength. In the fourth paragraph, the student mentions an aspect of the service they were unhappy with, specifically a damaged box containing an expensive item, alongside poor customer service response times. Finally, the letter includes a clear request for compensation in the fifth paragraph. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter, and all requirements are met adequately, placing this within the Band 6 descriptor.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter follows a generally coherent structure, making use of standard paragraphing appropriate for a formal letter. Ideas are logically grouped, with each bullet point receiving its own paragraph. However, cohesion at the sentence level is sometimes faulty or mechanical. The student relies heavily on repetitive conjunctions and linking phrases, such as 'first of all, I really very appreciate' and 'moreover, one of the staff member whose name is Nathan and he was very helpful'. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'one of the items was and it was very expensive', where a clause has been accidentally omitted. Overall arrangement is coherent, earning a Band 6.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating ideas about moving house, furniture, and customer service complaints. Words like 'professional', 'compensations', and 'damaged' are used correctly. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'give a feedback', 'logistic company', and repeated phrases like 'really so appreciate'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with some errors, but meaning remains clear throughout. These characteristics align with the Band 5.5 to 6 range, warranting a score of 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. While there are attempts at longer, multi-clause sentences, they frequently contain grammatical errors and punctuation issues, such as comma splices ('However, I found that ,one of the boxes was damaged...'). Other errors include subject-verb agreement and preposition issues, such as 'appreciate with the movers' instead of 'appreciate the movers', and missing words ('one of the items was and it was very expensive'). Capitalisation rules for the beginning of sentences and proper nouns (e.g., 'first of all', 'Maitri') are frequently ignored. These errors occasionally cause minor strain for the reader, placing the grammar score firmly at a Band 5.0.
