Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter regarding the service that your company provided recently in moving my belongings to a new location. I would really appreciate the opportunity to share my feedback on this occasion.

To begin with, the entire moving team with the truck arrived ahead of schedule. After analyzing and inspecting the furniture, they carefully started the process to carry them to the vehicle. Throughout the time, they handled items very carefully and gently, as it involved many delicate items like a glass mirror, and television for instance, which was very crucial for me.

I would particularly like to thank Mr. Adam, who was the team leader. This person was really fantastic and respectful throughout the time. Not only that, but he also handled the tasks very kindly and wrapped up things within the time duration mentioned in the terms.

However, the service was great, but, I would also like to mention one main aspect of dissatisfaction regarding it, it was the tire of the moving vehicle got punctured midway through the move. I understand this happened out of no where, but this significantly caused delay in the overall process.

I hope this letter helps you understand the feedback.

Yours faithfully,

Harsh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt. You begin by explaining what went well, noting that the moving team arrived ahead of schedule and handled your fragile items carefully, such as 'a glass mirror, and television'. You also successfully praise a specific employee, Mr. Adam, highlighting his respectful manner and time management. Finally, you mention an aspect of the service you were unhappy with—the punctured tire that caused a delay. The tone is appropriately formal for a complaint and feedback letter, starting with 'Dear Sir or Madam' and concluding correctly. All parts of the task are fully addressed and supported with relevant details, demonstrating a strong understanding of General Training Task 1 requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

Your letter is well-organized with a clear overall progression. The information is logically grouped into paragraphs, each serving a distinct function: introduction, positive aspects of the move, praise for an employee, negative aspect of the service, and a brief closing. You make good use of cohesive devices to guide the reader, such as 'To begin with', 'I would particularly like to thank', and 'However'. Paragraphing is used appropriately throughout. While referencing is mostly clear, a minor slip occurs in the transition 'However, the service was great, but, I would also like to mention', which contains a slight redundancy. Nevertheless, cohesion is well managed and ideas flow naturally from one point to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate to good range of vocabulary appropriate for a business or customer feedback letter. Phrases like 'ahead of schedule', 'analyzing and inspecting', and 'delicate items' show a functional and precise command of English. You also attempt some less common vocabulary items such as 'punctured midway'. However, there are minor lexical and collocational inaccuracies, such as 'carry them to the vehicle' (where 'carry' is slightly less natural than 'load') and 'this significantly caused delay' (which should be 'caused a significant delay'). Despite these occasional awkward word choices, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writing displays a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms. You successfully employ relative clauses and subordinate structures, such as 'who was the team leader' and 'I understand this happened out of no where'. There is good control of past tense verbs for narrating the moving day. However, a few grammatical errors and awkward phrasings persist, including 'out of no where' (should be 'out of nowhere') and the run-on structure in 'it was the tire of the moving vehicle got punctured'. Punctuation is generally fine, though commas are occasionally misplaced in complex sentences. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response comfortably within the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range.
