Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam

I am writting this letter to provide my review for your moving services.I am Najmin Manga and I hired movers to shift my belongings from Toronto to Belleville last week. On the day of shifting, we were really worried about weather as it was heavily raining since last week, however moving day turned out to be so sunny that we had to turn on our air conditioning as soon as we reached to new house.

All the workers were professional and helpful, but John in particular was exceptional at his job. He packed all the fragile items carefully into bubble wrap. There were several peices of furniture that my husband thought did not needed extra care during transportation, however he insisted on wrapping them ,which we are very glad about as it could have gone wrong otherwise.

Overall, everything went smoothly. Although we expected movers to label each boxes and help us with organizing big peices of furtinure, but they did not. Apart from these, they did deliever everything on time and intact.

wishing you continued success.

Yours faithfully,

Najmin Manga

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully covered all parts of the task prompt. You clearly explained what went well on the move day, specifically mentioning how the weather cleared up after heavy rain. You praised an employee named John for his exceptional care in packing fragile items and wrapping furniture. Furthermore, you mentioned an aspect of the service you were not happy with, noting that the movers failed to label boxes and help organize big pieces of furniture. Your tone is appropriate for a semi-formal complaint and feedback letter, and your ideas are well-developed and easy to follow. You met all the requirements of General Training Task 1 effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter has a clear overall progression and logical organization. You separated your thoughts into appropriate paragraphs, starting with the context and the weather, moving to the employee praise, addressing the negative aspect, and ending with a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'however', 'in particular', and 'although'. However, there are a few minor formatting and referencing issues, such as missing spaces after punctuation marks (e.g., 'services.I', 'furniture ,which'), which slightly disrupts the flow. Overall, the layout and paragraphing adhere to standard letter conventions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases like 'exceptional at his job', 'fragile items', and 'transportation'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'writting' instead of 'writing', 'peices' instead of 'pieces', 'did not needed' instead of 'did not need', 'furtinure' instead of 'furniture', and 'deliever' instead of 'deliver'. These minor lexical errors do not impede communication, but they prevent you from achieving a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as concessive clauses ('although we expected...') and conditional ideas. While many sentences are accurate, there are recurring grammatical slips. For example, 'I am writting this letter' contains a spelling error, 'did not needed' exhibits a tense error following an auxiliary verb, and there are punctuation errors like missing spaces. Despite these errors, meaning is never obscured, and the message remains clear throughout the letter.
