Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to provide some feedback on my recent move to a new apartment using your removal company's services.
First and foremost, everything was handled carefully, including the glass objects, which I was a bit afraid of getting broken during the move. Additionally, I was astonished to see how swift your employees were. They completed the moving of all my possessions and furniture in a timely manner, which made my move seamless and efficient.
I would like to commend Mr. Brown, who was quite professional and displayed attention to detail. He not only listened to all the directions keenly but also led his team members with compassion. He also made several changes based on my preferences.
One thing I was disappointed about was that one of my favourite lamps was left behind in my previous apartment. But your team made sure to bring it back to my new place. Overall, I am completely satisfied with the services provided by your company.
I look forward to using your services again.
Yours faithfully,
Mark Cornell

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the task instructions. First, the positive aspects of the move are explained clearly, noting that everything was handled carefully and the employees were remarkably swift. Second, an employee named Mr. Brown is specifically praised for his professionalism, attention to detail, and compassionate leadership. Finally, an aspect of the service that caused initial disappointment—the lamp being left behind—is mentioned, alongside how the team promptly resolved the issue. The tone is consistently polite and appropriate for a formal business letter, and all requirements are thoroughly covered, fully satisfying the descriptors for Band 7.5 or 8.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and natural progression throughout. The paragraphs are structured effectively, with each dedicated to a distinct aspect of the letter, such as the general feedback, the specific employee praise, and the minor issue regarding the lamp. Cohesive devices are used flexibly and appropriately, as seen with transition markers like 'First and foremost', 'Additionally', and 'Overall'. Referencing is clear throughout the text. Paragraphing is well-managed, leading to smooth transitions between ideas. The organisational structure meets all criteria for a Band 8.0 response.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The candidate demonstrates a sufficient and natural range of vocabulary that allows for precision and flexibility. Phrases such as 'handled carefully', 'in a timely manner', 'seamless and efficient', and 'attention to detail' show a good command of collocation and style. Less common lexical items are used effectively to convey meaning without straining the reader. While there are no major lexical errors, the vocabulary remains slightly standard in places, which places this text solidly within the Band 7.0 range, showing good lexical control and appropriacy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writing contains a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating effective control of grammar and punctuation. Examples of complex structures include relative clauses and subordinate clauses, such as 'which I was a bit afraid of getting broken during the move' and 'who was quite professional and displayed attention to detail'. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout the letter. The occasional minor awkwardness does not impede communication in any way, comfortably matching the Band 7.0 descriptors for grammatical control.
