Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The candidate successfully covers all the bullet points required in the prompt. The letter explains what went well on moving day, specifically mentioning the punctuality and equipment used by the removal company. It also praises an employee named Mr. John for his careful handling of delicate art pieces, and highlights an aspect of the service that was unsatisfactory, namely the poor quality of the cardboard boxes. A clear and appropriate semi-formal tone is adopted for a removal company, and the purpose of the letter is evident throughout. While some ideas could be extended further, all prompt requirements are met adequately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical paragraph structure that aligns with the different parts of the task. The introduction clearly states the purpose of the letter, subsequent paragraphs address the positive aspects and the specific employee, and the penultimate paragraph handles the complaint. However, there are noticeable cohesion issues and mechanical referencing problems throughout the text. For instance, the transition between sentences can be abrupt, and cohesive devices are limited or sometimes used inaccurately. Paragraphing is present and generally appropriate for a letter, but the overall flow feels slightly disjointed due to punctuation errors and run-on sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to moving house such as 'furniture', 'box truck', 'trolleys', and 'bubble wrap'. However, there are numerous lexical errors and spelling mistakes, such as 'feedback for shifting' instead of 'feedback on', 'thier' instead of 'their', 'appericate' instead of 'appreciate', 'delicated' instead of 'delicate', and 'card broad' instead of 'cardboard'. While these errors do not completely impede communication and the meaning remains clear, they restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.5, reflecting a limited control of word choice and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'These art work is very important for me because i spend a long time to possess them.' However, grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Royal removal company done', 'These art work is'), tense usage, and punctuation. Run-on sentences and comma splices are common, for example: 'The company employees come on time with thier box truck and trolleys or other equipment which give me the sign of professionalism. They quickly load the heavy item first...' These persistent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar performance firmly at a Band 5.0.
