Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I am writing to inform you about the service provided by your company for moving my furniture on 28th September at 515 Eglinton Road, Toronto, Ontario.
In the meantime, your team did great work wrapping all the furniture; hence, everything arrived without any damage, including the crockery, glasses, and utensils. I would appreciate your services. I also like the way they handle all heavy items, such as beds, sofas, and dining tables.
I wanted to let you know that all employees did their job well; especially John was well-mannered and very polite. I regret to inform you that your team was very slow. This caused considerable inconvenience, owing to my whole day being spent moving, and I could not do my office work. Furthermore, they did not come on time and also charged extra for wrapping
I would appreciate your prompt attention to this matter.
Yours faithfully,
Almas

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining what went well, praising an employee, and mentioning a negative aspect of the service. Specifically, you mentioned that your furniture arrived safely and praised John for being well-mannered, while also highlighting the slow pace and late arrival. However, some parts of the task are developed more fully than others. While the positive points and the praise are clearly stated, the negative aspects—such as being charged extra for wrapping—are mentioned rather briefly and lack full elaboration. To move into the higher band, all parts of the task would need to be extended with further relevant details and fully supported ideas, ensuring a more balanced development throughout the entire letter.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose established right from the opening sentence. Information is grouped logically into paragraphs, moving from the initial introduction to the positive elements, then the complaints, and finally a polite closing. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or slightly disjointed. For instance, the transition phrase 'In the meantime' is used inappropriately to introduce the positive service aspects, when a phrase like 'On the whole' or 'Overall' would suit the context better. Additionally, referencing could be managed more smoothly. To achieve a higher band, you need to ensure that cohesive devices are used more flexibly and accurately to create a seamless logical progression throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'considerable inconvenience,' 'crockery,' and 'utensils.' Communication is never impeded by your word choices. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'In the meantime' instead of a more suitable transitional phrase, and awkward phrasing like 'did great work wrapping.' Furthermore, there is a minor punctuation error in the salutation ('Dear sir,' instead of 'Dear Sir,'). To reach the next band, you should aim to use a wider range of vocabulary with greater precision, demonstrating a stronger command of collocation and stylistic appropriateness while minimising these occasional slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
Your response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over standard structures such as 'owing to my whole day being spent moving.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present, such as the missing full stop at the end of the sentence about wrapping, and minor awkwardness in verb forms like 'how they handle' instead of 'how they handled' when referring to a past event. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure your overall meaning. To progress further, you should strive for a higher proportion of error-free sentences and demonstrate greater control over complex sentence patterns and punctuation consistency across the entire letter.
