Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to give my feedback, because I have recently used your company's service to shift my furniture in my new apartment, as requested.

The team arrived on time and they handled the furniture properly, loading and unloading was done professionally. It took almost 3 hours to transfer all the belonging and also they properly dismantled and assembled beds. I am very happy from your service and will refer you to my friends and family, because one of my friends is going to shift in another apartment as well.

Everyone in the team worked properly and they know how to collaborate with each other while handling heavy items. But to be honest, John did a great job, he handled my glass items with care and properly shift them in the new place.

But I would like to highlight an aspect which I am not happy, is that the vehicle which was transfering the possessions faced the tire bust and team did not have a spare tire. So we had to wait one hour for the spare tire which causes delay in the transfer. Apart from this everything went well.

Yours faithfully,

Umer Nazeer

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, covering the reasons for writing, what went well, praising an employee named John, and highlighting a negative aspect regarding the flat tyre. There is a clear overall purpose and all bullet points are covered. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed rather than fully extended; for instance, the explanation of what went well lists several details like loading, unloading, and assembling beds, but lacks deeper elaboration. This positions the response comfortably in the solid achievement tier where the task is appropriately fulfilled, though pushing to a higher level would require more fully fleshed-out supporting details and richer context throughout the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introductory purpose to the positive aspects, the specific employee praise, the negative experience, and a concluding remark. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each distinct point. However, cohesion is sometimes a bit mechanical or repetitive, particularly with the frequent use of transition words like 'and' and 'But' to start consecutive sentences, such as 'But to be honest' and 'But I would like to highlight'. Referencing is generally clear, but the overarching flow could be smoother and more varied to demonstrate sophisticated organisational control, keeping the coherence profile consistent with a standard working level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an acceptable range with appropriate workplace and moving-related terms such as 'dismantled and assembled', 'collaborate', and 'possessions'. The writer attempts some less common phrasing, but there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies that prevent a higher score. For example, writing 'shift my furniture in my new apartment' instead of 'to' or 'into', and using 'shift them' rather than 'move' or 'transfer' them, alongside 'tire bust' instead of 'flat tyre'. Nevertheless, these lexical slips do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the intended meaning throughout the informal business correspondence style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating basic structural control with clauses linked by relative or conjunction structures. There are several grammar and punctuation errors present, such as preposition and article issues ('in my new apartment', 'the vehicle which was transfering the possessions faced the tire bust'), spelling slips ('transfering'), and tense or aspect awkwardness ('causes delay' instead of 'caused a delay'). These errors are noticeable but they rarely impede communication, and the sentence structures remain generally comprehensible. To reach a higher standard, the writer would need to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate tighter control over tense consistency and prepositions.
