Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to share my feedback about your services, which your company offer during my move to the new house.

Last month, on the 15th of september, I shifted to my new house, which was located in another province. Before, moving to this new house, I contacted with your firm to relocate my furniture and other belongings. Eventually, your team agreed to pick up my whole stuff from my old location. I would really appricate your staff, which was friendly and helpful. One of the employee named Rohit was an amzing personality. He helped me a lot in packing my stuff, which was not his actual job. Additionally, he was of jolly nature and helped us even in setting our furniture at right place at our new location.

Here, I would like to mention some areas, where you really need to make improvement. Firstly, instruct your team to reach on time to avoid unnecessary delays. Secondly, the truck that you sent to shift my furniture was not well maintained, as it stopped to work on the way resulting in long wait. If possible send delivery vehicles for monthly service, especially which are used to cover long distances. I hope these minor changes will help your company to grow faster.

Yours sincerely,

Neeraj Rana

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your response addresses all parts of the task satisfactorily. You successfully explain what went well during your move, praise a specific employee named Rohit for his exceptional helpfulness, and mention an aspect of the service you were unhappy with, specifically the mechanical failure of the truck and the delayed arrival. Your position is clear throughout the letter, and the main ideas are generally extended and supported, such as when you detail Rohit assisting with packing and furniture arrangement. However, some ideas show a tendency toward generalization, and certain points could have been developed with even greater depth or specific detail to fully secure a higher tier. Nonetheless, all three bullet points from the prompt are adequately covered in a suitable semi-formal tone, fulfilling the requirements for this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from your introduction to your positive feedback, areas for improvement, and closing remarks. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate different topics, such as separating the praise for Rohit from your complaints about the transport vehicle. Cohesive devices are used throughout the text, including transition words like 'Additionally', 'Firstly', and 'Secondly', which help guide the reader smoothly. However, cohesion is at times slightly mechanical or repetitive in structural patterns, and referencing can occasionally feel a bit rigid. To achieve a higher level, you could make the transitions between sentences and paragraphs more natural and fluid, ensuring that the relationships between your ideas are linked with greater subtlety rather than relying on standard sequential connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'relocate', 'province', and 'well maintained'. However, there are notable limitations and errors in word choice, collocation, and word form that place your writing at this level. For instance, phrases like 'whole stuff' are less natural than 'all of my belongings', 'stopped to work' should be 'stopped working', and 'monthly service' would be better expressed as 'routine maintenance' or 'regular servicing'. Additionally, there are minor lexical slips such as spelling 'appricate' and 'amzing', and the phrasing 'of jolly nature' is unnatural. To improve, you should focus on expanding your use of precise collocation and natural phrasing, while paying closer attention to spelling and standard word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating the ability to construct longer sentences with subordinate clauses, such as 'which was located in another province' and 'that you were not happy with'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples of grammatical lapses include unnecessary prepositions and articles, such as 'Before, moving to this new house' (unnecessary comma and awkward gerund phrase) and 'One of the employee' (plural noun required after 'one of the'). You also wrote 'on the 15th of september' (capitalization error) and 'at right place' (missing article). To reach a higher standard, you need to increase your control over complex grammatical structures, ensuring greater accuracy in article usage, prepositional patterns, and punctuation so that your sentences remain consistently error-free.
