Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
Hope you are having a wonderful day.
This is Lynn Mark from Sunrise Apartments, East Boulevard, writing to express my heartfelt gratitude towards your company's assistance during my shifting. Let me assure you that I could not have managed it so well by myself if it would not have been your employees.
As you can remember, on the moving day, I had all my china and glass crockery unpacked, while my furniture was also assembled like it was new. As soon as your people came in, they did not waste a minute and immediately they started packing all the stuff. My kitchen appliances, my crockery and china disches all were packed with so much care with the bubble wraps first and then with soft cartons to add extra cushion. My furniture was also dismantled quickly by your staff so that it could be transferred easily to your truck. Then all the miscellaneous items were packed in boxes with proper labels on them.
I would especially like to highlight Mr. David Parker, who by the way was very experienced among all of them, yet he had immense energy to move stuff. He not only directed people on how to pack things, but also helped them physically in moving them. He was reassuring me every now and then that my possessions will be well taken care of.
However, in all that went well, there is always room for improvement that keeps the business running and thriving. Here I would like to draw your attention towards the physical appearance of your staff. As they appeared very over-worked to me. Despite the fact that they were working very quickly but I noticed that most of them were working double shifts. For a physically draining job like moving, I would request you to allow your staff to take proper sleep and nutrition so they are not deprived while making a living for themselves.
In all, it was an excellent experience and I will be recommending your company to all my freinds and family.
Good day!
Regards,
Lynn Mark

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, satisfying the requirements for a General Training letter. You covered what went well on the moving day, praised a specific employee, and mentioned an aspect of the service you were not entirely happy with. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. However, while all bullet points are present, some ideas display the characteristics of a band six because they are slightly under-developed or drift into generalized commentary. For instance, the discussion regarding the physical appearance and double shifts of the staff is introduced as a negative aspect, but it reads more like general advice or observation rather than a direct complaint about the service received. To reach a higher standard, all points need to be fully extended with specific impacts and clear personal relevance rather than broad assumptions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the opening purpose to the specific details of the move, the employee praise, the constructive criticism, and the polite closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately, separating the distinct ideas into dedicated sections. However, referencing and cohesive devices occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or faulty, which keeps the response at this level. For instance, transitional phrases like 'However, in all that went well' or referencing structures such as 'if it would not have been your employees' create slight bumps in the flow. To achieve a higher band, the transitions between paragraphs and sentences need to be smoother and more natural, avoiding repetitive phrasing while ensuring that every cohesive link feels entirely integrated into the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'heartfelt gratitude', 'miscellaneous items', and 'thriving'. Communication is generally clear, and the chosen words convey your meaning effectively. Nevertheless, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that prevent a higher score. Phrases like 'during my shifting' (instead of 'my move' or 'relocation') and 'china disches' (spelling and collocation slip) show that vocabulary control is not yet fully precise. Additionally, terms like 'freinds' contain spelling errors. To push into higher bands, you should aim to use a wider range of sophisticated lexical items with greater precision, ensuring that collocations are entirely natural and spelling errors are eliminated.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct varied clauses. Sentences such as 'He not only directed people on how to pack things, but also helped them physically in moving them' show a good attempt at complexity. However, there are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include 'if it would not have been your employees' (which should be a conditional structure like 'had it not been for your employees') and awkward verb forms or prepositions. While these errors rarely impede communication and meaning remains clear, they persist enough to characterise this level. To improve, you should focus on mastering complex grammatical structures, particularly conditionals and prepositional usage, to ensure a higher proportion of error-free sentences.
