Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to provide my feedback regarding the service which I enrolled last week to move my furniture to my new apartment in Mumbai.

The staff was very kind and helped me arrange my furniture. Although, I booked the service a day prior the response was very prompt and everyone was very helpful in providing the information required. I am very thankful to Ravi who was the head, he really made an extra effort in organizing my boxes, labelling them for me. He was very kind to guide me how to pack the delicate groceries. This really saved up alot time and energy as I was alone shifting all my stuff.

However, It would be great if they can come on time, I understand sometimes due to traffic things can bet delayed. It will be good if you can inform the person regarding the delay. Otherwise the overall experience was amazing.

I will surely recommend your service in my friends and collegues.

Yours Sincerely,

Diksha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the task, meeting the requirement for a general letter. You clearly explain what went well on the day of the move, such as the prompt response and staff assistance. You also effectively praise a specific employee, Ravi, mentioning how he organized boxes and helped with delicate groceries, which directly addresses the second bullet point. Furthermore, you mention an aspect of the service you were not happy with, specifically the timing issue and lack of prior communication regarding delays. Your ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, with the foundation for a higher band appearing in the specific details provided about Ravi's assistance. However, some ideas remain slightly concise or standard rather than fully extended, which keeps the response at this solid level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression from the purpose of the letter to the details of the service, the employee praise, the complaint, and finally a recommendation. The letter uses standard formal opening and closing conventions appropriately. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct points, showing elements of the next band through this clear functional division. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or abrupt, particularly in transitions like "Although, I booked the service a day prior" and the sudden shift to the negative aspect using "However, It would be great if they can come on time,". Referencing is mostly clear, but smoother linking words and more flexible cohesive devices are needed to achieve a higher score.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including functional terms related to moving house such as "furniture," "apartment," "organizing," and "labelling." There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary items and phrases like "prompt response" and "made an extra effort." However, there are occasional word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as writing "alot" instead of "a lot" and minor awkwardness in phrasing like "service which I enrolled last week" instead of "service which I booked or used." There are also slight colocation slips such as "shifting all my stuff" or "in my friends and collegues" instead of "among my friends and colleagues." These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect the vocabulary limits of this band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate clauses such as "I am very thankful to Ravi who was the head" and "I understand sometimes due to traffic things can bet delayed." There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly with comma splices in sentences like "However, It would be great if they can come on time, I understand sometimes due to traffic things can bet delayed." Verb form errors also occur, such as "can bet delayed" instead of "can get delayed." Despite these errors in grammar and punctuation, they rarely impede communication, and you maintain reasonable control over basic structures while attempting more complex ones.
