Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to share my recent experience with your removal company.

First of all, I was highly impressed with the coordination and organizing skills of your staff. Every individual was well aware of their duties and they completed them duly.

I would like to mention about a specific employee, named Maggie, who performed her responsibilities, deligently. She was packing my kitchen utensils and organizers, and she took extra care of every fragile item. I remember how she labelled the boxes with sticky notes so that I know which one contains what. Not just this, but she also added fragile stickers to the boxes which had glasses or breakable crockery.

There was only one thing that I do not appreciate, was not getting things done on time. As I was promised that the whole moving process would take approximately two to three hours but originally it took more than four hours. I believe if that could be worked upon, your services would be amazing.

Thank you for your help.

Yours faithfully,

Neha George

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task prompt in an appropriate semi-formal tone. It clearly explains what went well during the move, praises a specific employee named Maggie for her careful handling of fragile items, and highlights a negative aspect regarding the delay in completion time. The communication purpose is fully achieved with a clear and consistent stance throughout. To move towards a higher band, the development of ideas could be slightly more extended, particularly in the final paragraph where the discussion of the time delay is somewhat brief and could include more specific details about the impact of the delay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the opening purpose to positive aspects, employee praise, negative feedback, and a polite closing. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Not just this, but she also', and 'There was only one thing' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is managed sufficiently and appropriately. To achieve an even higher level, cohesion could be made slightly more seamless and varied, avoiding occasional mechanical transitions between ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general task of this nature, demonstrating attempts at less common lexical items such as 'coordination', 'deligently', and 'fragile items'. However, there are some minor word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as the misspelling of 'deligently' (should be 'diligently') and slightly unnatural phrasing in sentences like 'I would like to mention about a specific employee'. These minor slips place the response firmly in this band. To reach higher bands, the vocabulary needs to display greater precision and stylistic flexibility with fewer mechanical errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response employs a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating adequate control over basic structures and punctuation. There are some successful complex sentences, such as 'I remember how she labelled the boxes with sticky notes so that I know which one contains what' (though with a minor tense shift). However, a few grammatical and punctuation errors persist, such as in the sentence 'There was only one thing that I do not appreciate, was not getting things done on time', which contains a tense inconsistency and awkward clause structure. These errors do not impede communication, reflecting solid control while leaving room for the frequent error-free complex sentences required at higher levels.
