Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response of the service your company had provided to assist me to move my furniture and possessions to my new apartment. Firstly, on the day I moved house, the helpers helped me in loading and unloading of my belongings. They carefully place everything as per my needs. I was particularly impressed by one of your employee Mr. Alex, who patiently listened all my instructions and arranged my furniture accordingly. One thing that I dislike the most was they did not helped me with wiring needed for activating Wi-fi and television. As it does not require a professional expertise, they could helped me with that but they denied and left after completing their work of moving the furniture.

Thank you for your services and I would be glad if you could help your clients with these kinds of tasks in future.

Yours sincerely,

Alena

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, fulfilling the requirements for a general correspondence letter. You clearly explained what went well by detailing how the helpers loaded and unloaded belongings carefully, praised a specific employee named Mr. Alex who patiently listened to instructions, and mentioned an aspect you were unhappy with regarding the lack of assistance with Wi-Fi and television wiring. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint and feedback letter. To reach a higher band, some of these ideas could be extended further with more elaboration on the impact of the issues raised, and the conclusion could better summarise your overall expectations for future service.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

There is a clear overall progression to your letter, and you have adopted a standard formal letter format with an appropriate opening and sign-off. Information and ideas are generally well sequenced, moving logically from the positive aspects to the specific complaint and final appreciation. However, paragraphing could be managed more effectively, as grouping the entire body of the letter into a single dense block slightly limits the flow. Cohesive devices are used, but referencing and transitions between sentences can feel a little mechanical at times. To move towards higher bands, ensure proper paragraph breaks are used to separate distinct topics such as the praise, the complaint, and the conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully conveying your meaning with words like 'possessions', 'apartment', and 'instructions'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but these are occasionally accompanied by minor inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'response of' instead of 'response to', and 'dislike the most' where 'disappointed me the most' might be more natural in a formal context. Spelling is generally accurate, and your lexical errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate a wider variety of precise, sophisticated vocabulary and demonstrate better control over collocations and prepositional phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. However, there are noticeable errors in grammar and mechanics, such as verb tense inconsistencies ('service your company had provided'), missing prepositions, and non-standard verb patterns like 'listened all my instructions' (missing 'to') and 'they did not helped me' (incorrect base verb form after 'did not'). While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they occur with some regularity and reflect a lack of consistent control over complex structures. To improve, focus on ensuring correct subject-verb agreements, accurate auxiliary verb usage, and precise prepositional patterns within your sentences.
