Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to give a review of the service rendered by the Excellent Courier. I recently relocated to a new apartment, so I had to move my belongings from my old house in Wells Esate to a new building in Festac which was about two hours drive. After payment, I was informed that the movers would arrive at my house by 7am on Saturday morning to assist me with moving the furniture and other items from my apartment to the bus. On the said date, the workers arrived at exactly 7am, just as I was told and they were very professional.
There was a particular mover named Samuel who was really helpful. He made sure that all the furniture were well arranged in the bus and he made sure to handle fragile items with care to prevent damage. After the service, I offered him a gift which he didn't accept because it was against the company's policy. I was really impressed by his work ethic.
However, when we got to the new residence, the movers only offloaded the furnitures into the compound and they didn't assist me with arranging the items into the apartment.
Thank you for an amazing service and I look forward to an improved one in the future.
Yours faithfully,
Mariam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose. You explain that the movers arrived at 7 a.m. as promised and behaved professionally, praise Samuel with specific examples of how he protected fragile items, and identify the problem that the crew left the furniture in the compound rather than taking it into the apartment. These details make the feedback relevant and supported. To develop the response further, clarify the practical impact of the shortcoming and state more directly what you expected the company to do. The closing thanks the company, but a more balanced final comment could acknowledge the good work while making your concern clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information is organised in a clear progression: the opening explains the move, the next paragraph focuses on Samuel, and the final body paragraph introduces the service problem. This paragraphing helps the reader follow the different aspects of your feedback, and linking expressions such as “After” and “However” signal the sequence and contrast. The letter is easy to understand throughout. To make the organisation more polished, avoid repeating “he made sure” in the praise paragraph; combine the two points or vary the reference. The transition into the complaint could also be more explicit, for example by signalling that this was the one part of the service that fell short.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal service letter, including “relocated,” “fragile items,” “professional,” and “work ethic.” These choices communicate the events and your positive assessment clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate. Some word choices and collocations are less natural or precise, however: “service rendered” sounds stiff, “two hours drive” is not idiomatic, and “furnitures” is not the standard form of the noun. “Bus” may also be unclear for a vehicle used by a removal company. To strengthen this area, favour natural service-related expressions and check common collocations and countability, while retaining the specific details that make your feedback convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes both simple and more complex sentence forms, such as the opening sentence explaining why you moved and the clause describing Samuel’s care with fragile items. Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and the past-tense narrative is generally consistent. Some grammatical errors remain, including “two hours drive,” which needs a possessive form, and “all the furniture were,” where the subject requires singular agreement. The sentence beginning “After payment” also leaves the agent unclear. Review agreement with uncountable nouns and possessive constructions, and make sure introductory phrases clearly connect to the person or action they describe. These refinements would improve accuracy without changing the clear overall message.
