Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this to express my gratitude towards Uhaul's moving service, it was above and beyond my expectations and made my relocating a smooth experience.

The moving was scheduled for last weekend and I used the online platform to book the service rather than in-person which was highly beneficial as I was short on time. The truck was provided with the moving cart, it helped me to locate the furniture with ease. Also the friction carpets in the truck made sure my belongings get transported damage free.

In addition to this I would like to appreciate Ron's help for loading and unloading the heavy items and driving it smothly to my new residence. Apart from this I would like you to change the time limitation imposed by the company, it really made the experince an axious task as otherwise I would have been charged double the price which is an unfair policy. I hope you look into this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Ranbir

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requested points: you describe the convenient online booking and useful equipment, praise Ron for helping with loading, unloading and driving, and identify the time limit and potential double charge as concerns. Your overall purpose is clear and the complaint is relevant. The positive details are reasonably specific, but the criticism would be stronger if you explained what the time limit was or gave an example of how it affected the move. The praise of Ron could also be developed with a clearer example of his helpfulness beyond listing his duties. These details would make the feedback more fully supported while retaining the clear, appropriate tone of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: you introduce your purpose, describe what went well, praise Ron, and then raise the concern. Paragraphing helps distinguish the opening from the main feedback, and linking phrases such as “In addition to this” and “Apart from this” guide the reader through the points. The sequence is easy to follow, though the final paragraph combines praise and criticism, so separating these ideas would make the structure more balanced. Some links feel slightly formulaic, and the long opening sentence joins two complete ideas with a comma. More varied transitions and clearer sentence boundaries would make the cohesion smoother and less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a service-feedback letter, including “above and beyond my expectations,” “relocating,” and “time limitation.” These choices communicate your meaning, and the tone is generally suitable. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “friction carpets,” “locate the furniture,” and “appreciate Ron’s help for.” There are also spelling errors in “smothly,” “experince,” and “axious.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and polish. Aim for natural combinations such as “protective floor mats,” “move the furniture,” and “thank Ron for his help,” and proofread carefully for spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “which was highly beneficial” and the conditional structure in “as otherwise I would have been charged.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. In the opening, a comma joins two independent clauses; use a full stop or a conjunction. “Made sure my belongings get transported” shifts tense, so “were transported” would fit the past account. In “help for loading and unloading … and driving it,” the structure and pronoun reference are unclear; for example, “helping to load and unload … and drive the truck” is more controlled. Check punctuation and keep verb forms consistent.
