Student answer (Band 6.0)

Recently, due to influence from social media and other online websites people specially in urban areas prefer to buy new clothes more often than needed. Following the western culture, norms and their mindset of appearing trendy on social media have persuaded them to follow this. This needs to be addressed by increasing the amount of taxes on clothes and educating them on making rational choices.

To begin with, people specially young generation are trying to evolve by adopting to the affluent lifestyles of celebrities and western society. Social media has incredibly influenced to follow this practices in order to appear trendy and follow fashion. They believe in this race of fashion they might appear outdated, which affects their friendship. For instance a college going student is under constant pressure to make himself look updated with trend to maintain friendships with people around. Consequently, this all lead them to impulsively buy new clothes.

Consequently, in order to address such concerns people should be made aware of negative consequences of following this trend. This being eradication of our culture and practices which is a gift from ancestors giving us unique personality. This can be possible by arranging programs on cultural awareness and preventing it before its complete eradication. Moreover, taxes and duties on this clothing should be increased so rather than impulsive buying it, people will atleast give it a second thought about its necessity. This practices will certainly reduce the trend to blindly follow western culture of appearing trendy.

Overall, this practice can certainly be prevented by education and proper cultural awareness. This will be a step towards a transformative society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both questions and maintain a clear overall view: social-media pressure encourages frequent purchases, while education and higher clothing taxes could discourage them. The example of a college student trying to look fashionable to maintain friendships helps illustrate the first reason. However, the explanation of why people buy too many clothes is more developed than the proposed solutions. Cultural awareness is presented as a way to prevent the loss of traditions, but the link between this and reducing clothing purchases needs clearer explanation. The tax proposal is relevant, though you could explain how it might change buying habits and acknowledge possible drawbacks. Developing both solutions with specific examples would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for causes and solutions, and a concluding statement. Ideas generally progress in a sensible order, and linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “For instance,” and “Moreover” help guide the reader. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. “Consequently” begins the solutions paragraph even though the relationship to the previous paragraph is not a direct consequence, and “This being eradication of our culture” does not clearly connect the proposed awareness programmes to the problem. The conclusion also repeats the general solution without bringing the main points together. Use more precise referencing and explain the links between ideas to improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “impulsively,” “cultural awareness,” “affluent lifestyles,” and “negative consequences.” These choices show an attempt to express ideas beyond basic vocabulary, and the meaning is generally clear. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however, such as “influence from social media,” “adopting to the affluent lifestyles,” and “follow this practices.” The repeated use of “trend,” “trendy,” and “fashion” also limits variety. Aim for more natural combinations and precise wording, particularly when describing social pressure and consumer behaviour. For example, “social-media influence” and “emulate celebrities’ lifestyles” would express these ideas more idiomatically.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “a college going student is under constant pressure … to maintain friendships” and the conditional structure “so … people will at least give it a second thought.” The overall meaning is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. Examples include “people … prefer” where the subject is plural but the sentence structure is awkward, “this practices,” and “this all lead them,” which show problems with agreement and number. The fragment “This being eradication of our culture and practices” is also incomplete, while punctuation is missing after “fashion” in one sentence. Check agreement, sentence completeness, and punctuation, and revise complex sentences to ensure each has a clear main clause.
