Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that in the past few years, people have bought clothes in excess. There are some reasons why this is happening all over the world, and there are some ways to reduce the number of clothes.

People believe that it is most common among people who are rich because they think they have some specific kind of status which they show in society. They want to show others that they are rich and have a collection that normal people can not buy. For example, there is a web series on Netflix in which it is mostly common that a woman is buying clothes to show her competitors, and she buys so much that she cannot even wear some of them. Another reason is that they do not want to repeat clothes that they have worn so many times. They do not feel confident while wearing them, as their mind is not releasing happy hormones.

However, others believe that they have to reduce the number of clothes they buy, as there are so many things popular these days which are inspiring people not to do so. They can see some videos and banners which show not to buy so many clothes, but if they buy, they need to give them to others so that their money does not get wasted. People think they have to get properly educated about this. Schools are the best option for that, teaching them about this.

In conclusion, I believe that people have to create some type of form or arrangement that saves money and space in their home also, they have to get properly educated

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for overconsumption and ways to reduce it. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The explanation regarding 'happy hormones' is a bit vague and lacks a clear connection to the broader issue of consumerism. While the example of the Netflix series is relevant, the discussion on solutions is quite brief and lacks depth. To improve, you should expand on your points with more detailed explanations or concrete examples. For instance, when discussing education, you could elaborate on how specific school programs or government campaigns might effectively change consumer behavior.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'There are some reasons' and 'Another reason is' are functional but basic. The transition between the problem and the solution could be smoother. Additionally, some sentences feel slightly disconnected, such as the final sentence of the conclusion, which is grammatically incomplete and lacks a clear link to the preceding argument. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a strong, unified focus would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'competitors' and 'consumerism' (implied). However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple phrasing. For example, 'people have bought clothes in excess' is clear, but could be more sophisticated. There are also some slightly unnatural collocations, such as 'create some type of form or arrangement'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise, topic-specific vocabulary related to fashion, sustainability, and economic behavior.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings. For instance, 'it is mostly common that a woman is buying' is grammatically clunky, and 'they have to get properly educated' is repetitive. There are also punctuation issues, such as the run-on sentence in the conclusion: '...space in their home also, they have to get...'. To improve, focus on sentence variety and ensure that your complex sentences are constructed accurately, paying close attention to subject-verb agreement and proper punctuation.
