Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for excessive clothing consumption and potential solutions. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. The reasons provided—social status and fast-changing fashion trends—are well-supported with personal examples. The solutions, such as financial management education and environmental awareness, are also logical and directly linked to the problem. However, the development of the solutions could be slightly more nuanced to reach a higher band. Overall, the response is well-structured and fulfills all requirements of the task, maintaining a clear position throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'In addition to this', and 'To recapitulate' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Referencing is generally clear, and the progression of ideas from the problem to the solution is logical and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'ostentatious nature', 'volatile latest fashion market', and 'materialistic belongings' show an attempt to use less common lexical items. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'dresses' used to refer to clothes in general, 'appealable' instead of 'appealing', and 'demerits' which is slightly formal/unnatural in this context. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, but there are several recurring errors that prevent a higher score. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('my elder sisters works'), incorrect article usage ('in as a fashion designer'), and minor punctuation or phrasing errors ('pollution underground water' instead of 'polluting'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to suggest that the control over complex structures is not yet fully consistent. More attention to proofreading for small grammatical slips would be beneficial.
