Student answer (Band 6.5)

It has been noticed that people in some nations purchase a large number of clothes. I believe this is true and this approach is due to multiple reasons. In the upcoming essay, we will discuss the reasons for this trend and suggest some measures to reduce their buying.

To commence with, one of the primary reasons for this approach is weather, as some countries have all the four seasons. Consequently, they have a different weather and temperature throughout the year. Due to this, the citizens of such nations have to get clothing and footware for every season such as shorts for summer, jackets for fall, and snow shoes for winter. For example, because of the diversity of weather in North American countries like Canada and the US, people have to buy clothes every quarter of the year. Morever, there is one more factor which can cause excess buying of attires and that is 'fast fashion'. Fashion and trends are changing at least two to three times annually. Therefore, the young generation is keen on following this trend which leads to excessive purchase of garments.

Furthermore, several measures can be taken by individuals to reduce this buying culture. Firstly, they should focus on buying high quality clothes. So, instead of buying new items every year they can use the previous ones. This measure could save them money as well. Secondly, they should consider donating their extra clothes to needy people. This could enhance the sense of community among people. Additionally, there are numerous recycling centres where we can recycle and trade our clothes for money.

To sum up, as per aforementioned arguments, it is clear that people are buying excessively because of climate or fast fashion trends. This could be reduced to an extent by buying high quality clothes and sometimes by donating or recycling them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for excessive clothing purchases and solutions to reduce them. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact of climate and 'fast fashion' trends, and the suggestions for solutions are practical. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of how climate necessitates more clothing could be expanded to include the psychological aspect of consumerism or the influence of social media. The position is clear throughout, but the essay would benefit from more depth and specific examples to reach a higher band. Overall, it covers all parts of the task adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Consequently', 'Furthermore', and 'To sum up' are used to guide the reader. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, the student could work on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this approach') is always precise to avoid any ambiguity.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, with terms like 'excessive purchase', 'fast fashion', and 'needy people'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'footware' (spelled 'footwear') and 'attires' (which is usually uncountable or used differently). The range is adequate for the task, but there is limited use of less common or idiomatic language. To achieve a higher score, the student should aim to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and precise terminology related to consumer behavior and environmental sustainability, while ensuring correct spelling and word form usage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over basic grammar, and errors rarely impede communication. However, there are some minor slips, such as 'have a different weather' (should be 'different weather patterns') and 'all the four seasons' (should be 'all four seasons'). The use of punctuation is mostly correct, though some phrasing is slightly unnatural. To improve, the student should focus on refining complex sentence structures and ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement and article usage to minimize these occasional errors.
